In Salford, we discover Ordsall Hall, a striking 15th-century timber-framed manor rising unexpectedly from a quiet street. In Worsley, we follow the golden waters of the Bridgewater Canal past black-and-white cottages, through the birthplace of Britain's canal age. We close at the John Rylands Library, a soaring neo-Gothic masterpiece of stained glass and stone vaulting. One of the most beautiful reading rooms in the world, and a quiet, cathedral-like end to the day. Quiet gardens, still water, historic stone and soft light.
