Sidon or Saïda (Arabic: صيدا‎‎, صيدون), is the third-largest city in Lebanon. Name derived from Sidon the son of Canaan, Its name coincides with the modern Arabic word for 'fishery'. Sidon has been inhabited since very early in prehistory. It was one of the most important Phoenician cities. From there and other ports a great Mediterranean commercial empire was founded.
