Dear Visitors, WELCOME TO CYPRUS I come from Famagusta (in Greek Ammochostos) and since the Turkish Invation I live in Nicosia (in Greek Lefkosia). I studied Oceanography at the University of Hamburg (F. R. Germany) but since 2006 I am a freelance licensed tourist guide, guiding in German, English and Greek. If you are visiting Cyprus alone, or along with your family and friends, it will be a pleasure for me to welcome you to my country and show you around the island. Pls have a look at my tour list! Overview of your Nicosia tour
We start from Nicosia (Lefkosia) and visit 4 out of 12 painted Byzantine churches that belong to the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as one painted Byzantine church of the same era which is not listed in the UNESCO List. The churches are the following: Ayios Sozomenos in Galata (14th century AD), Panayia Podithou in Galata (14th century AD), Archangelos in Galata (14th century AD), Ayios Nikolaos of the Roof at Kakopetria (12th century AD) and Panayia Forviotissa at Asinou (12th century AD). During the Byzantine period most people could not read and write, so in order to understand the Bible churches were decorated with frescoes picturing scenes from the Bible. Being an educated and licensed tourist guide I will give you an overview of the religious history pictured, as well as a detailed description of the techniques applied. We have a coffee break in Kakopetria and a lunch break in Asinou.
