I live in a very special place, and it would be my absolute pleasure to share it with you. The place I live is special. What makes it so special? My community of 700 people is located inside a 538-acre park, only a 15-minute ferry ride away from the heart of Toronto's downtown. It's a beautiful, spacious park, one of Toronto's most popular tourist attractions. Where we live is car-free and store-free, making for an unusual lifestyle, unique in North America. We want you to see our community's charm, our vibrant artists' community, and know what it's like to live year- round on the Island, quite different from the hustle and bustle of what Islanders call "the mainland, " aka Toronto. By tour's end, you'll know about the struggle to save our homes from the bulldozers, and about the day-to-day life of Islanders--people who take a boat to school or work, borrow sugar from their neighbours, have an 11:30 curfew when the ferry makes its last run, and have a community phone book categorized by first names.
• We meet you when you get off the ferry at Ward's Island and visit two communities that make up the Toronto Island community; one on Ward's Island, known as the "inner city" and the other on Algonquin Island, known as "the suburbs. " You'll see why. • We'll start the walk with some local history and archival photos, stroll past the gardens of our Islander-run café, situated in an historic building. From there, on to the special pebble mosaic created by a local artist, then into the Ward's community to see cottage-style homes and gardens; artwork by Island artisans; a meadow and sandy beaches. We'll then walk the beautiful wooden boardwalk along the open waters of Lake Ontario to Algonquin Island. • We'll take a footbridge to "the suburbs" to see different styles of homes and gardens; bring you to the best spot to see the Toronto skyline and CN Tower, pass by my home as we return to the footbridge to end our tour.
