Hi, I’m Felipe, a historian, history teacher and tour guide born and raised in São Paulo. For me, this city is the best place to understand Brazil: every street tells a story of the many peoples who built it. On my tours, we’ll read São Paulo in layers. We’ll start with the Indigenous peoples whose land and words still shape the city’s map, and the Afro-Brazilian heritage that runs through its history, music and food. Then come the waves of Italian, Japanese, Arab, Jewish, Korean and Bolivian immigrants who turned it into one of the most diverse cities in the world. We’ll see it in the architecture, too: from colonial churches and coffee-era palaces to Art Deco towers and the bold modernism of Niemeyer and Lina Bo Bardi. I’m also an active member of São Paulo’s Jewish community, and through Zahav Tours I guide travelers through the Jewish history of Brazil. My tours are private and flexible: tell me what you’re curious about, and we’ll shape the day together. I guide in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Hebrew.

Discover São Paulo in one day with a historian as your guide. From the spot where the city was founded in 1554 to the skyscrapers of Avenida Paulista, we'll see how a small Jesuit village on Indigenous land became one of the largest and most diverse cities in the world. Along the way, you'll understand how coffee wealth, African and Indigenous heritage and immigrants from Italy, Japan, the Middle East and beyond shaped the city's streets, flavors and architecture: from colonial churches and coffee-era palaces to Art Deco towers and bold modernist buildings. This is the perfect first tour of São Paulo. It's private and fully flexible, so we can adjust the route, pace and stops to your interests.
1. Pátio do Colégio and Praça da Sé – the birthplace of São Paulo and its Indigenous and Jesuit origins. 2. São Bento Monastery and Historic Center – colonial roots, coffee-era wealth and the Theatro Municipal. 3. Mercado Municipal – tropical fruits, local flavors and the famous mortadella sandwich. 4. Liberdade – the heart of the largest Japanese community outside Japan. 5. Avenida Paulista and MASP – modern São Paulo and Lina Bo Bardi's iconic museum building. 6. Ibirapuera Park (optional) – Niemeyer's modernist architecture in the city's green heart. The order and stops can be adapted to your interests, opening hours and traffic.

This tour combines walking with São Paulo's metro and short rideshare (Uber) trips between neighborhoods, the easiest and most local way to move around the city. Metro and rideshare fares are not included and are paid on the spot (usually a small amount). Prefer more comfort? A private vehicle with driver can be added for an extra cost. Just message me before booking and I'll send you a customized quote.
