Jewish São Paulo – History, Heritage & Community

Explore more than a century of Jewish life in São Paulo with a historian and member of the local Jewish community. We'll follow the immigrants who arrived through the port of Santos and settled in Bom Retiro, where synagogues, schools and workshops still tell their stories. Then we'll move to Higienópolis, the heart of Jewish life today. You'll hear Ashkenazi and Sephardic stories of migration, identity and memory, and see how the Jewish community helped shape São Paulo's culture, politics and economy, side by side with Italian, Arab, Japanese and Korean immigrants. This is a living community, not just a museum. Kosher food, Shabbat timing and different levels of observance can be accommodated on request.

1. Bom Retiro – the first Jewish neighborhood in São Paulo: its streets, workshops and historic synagogues. 2. Jewish Immigration and Holocaust Memorial – in Kehilat Israel, the oldest synagogue in São Paulo. 3. Casa do Povo – a historic Jewish cultural center, from secular Yiddish culture to today's arts scene. 4. Jewish Museum of São Paulo – housed in a beautifully restored historic synagogue. 5. Higienópolis – today's Jewish community, with a visit to an active synagogue when available. On Saturdays and Jewish holidays, synagogue and museum visits follow their own schedules, and the itinerary is adapted.
