Hello and welcome to Kyoto! My name is Mike, and I would love to share the beauty of Japan with you — not only as a tour guide, but also as a storyteller and writer. Kyoto is famous for its temples, shrines, gardens, and World Heritage Sites. But the true charm of Kyoto lies in its rich diversity. Of course, we can visit the famous places loved by visitors from around the world. Yet just a few steps away from the crowded tourist spots, there are often quiet hidden temples, peaceful gardens, and small streets where the spirit of old Kyoto still lives softly. I always hope my guests can experience both sides of Kyoto — the well-known beauty and the secret beauty. Before becoming a guide, I worked as a private school teacher for more than 30 years. During that time, I studied the cultural differences between East and West, including history, religion, art, architecture, gardens, and ways of thinking. Today, I continue this work not only as a guide, but also as a writer exploring the invisible connections between Japanese and Western culture. My tours are not simply “information tours.” I prefer to guide through storytelling. Why are Japanese gardens so quiet and peaceful? Why do Zen temples use empty space so beautifully? Why does Kyoto architecture feel so gentle and natural compared with many Western buildings? Through stories, humor, history, and everyday cultural details, I hope to make Kyoto feel alive and personal for my guests. Whether you are deeply interested in culture, photography, architecture, spirituality, or simply wish to enjoy Kyoto at a slower and more meaningful pace, I would be very happy to explore this beautiful city together with you.

Our guide for our all day tour of Kyoto, Mike, was extraordinary. As we arrived at the Kobe port, aboard a cruise ship, Mike was present at the Ocean Terminal with a taxi reserved to take our small party of three to the Kobe train station to move us to Kyoto (through Osaka). We purchased round trip tickets so that we could return to the Kobe cruise terminal in the evening...

The tour was very enjoyable. Mike was flexible and very helpful from the meet up to the drop off. We had a wonderful day in Kyoto and riding the shinkansen.

We had a wonderful day with Mike and can highly recommend him. What stood out most was how thoughtfully he adapted the tour to our wishes. Rather than focusing mainly on tourist hotspots, we were looking for deeper background, history, and cultural insight — and Mike understood that perfectly. Of course, we also visited some iconic places, but the real highlight was...

Hi Jen, I am incredibly touched by your kind words! Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed reflection of our tour. Working with you didn't feel like "guiding" at all—it felt like sharing a passion with like-minded friends. I was so impressed by how you connected with the atmosphere and meaning behind the gardens, rather than just the facts. You made the...

This was the second day with Mike and he took us to Nijo Castle, a walkng tour of Gion, the Golden Palace, Bamboo Forest, Arashiyama, and Fushimi Inari Shrine. At every place, he gave us a thorough historical and cultural context for what we were experiencing. The day was as much as we had hoped for. Oh, and he took us to lunch where we had outstanding Ramen noodles!
