Hello and welcome to Kyoto! My name is Mike, and I would love to share the beauty of Japan with you — not only as a tour guide, but also as a storyteller and writer. Kyoto is famous for its temples, shrines, gardens, and World Heritage Sites. But the true charm of Kyoto lies in its rich diversity. Of course, we can visit the famous places loved by visitors from around the world. Yet just a few steps away from the crowded tourist spots, there are often quiet hidden temples, peaceful gardens, and small streets where the spirit of old Kyoto still lives softly. I always hope my guests can experience both sides of Kyoto — the well-known beauty and the secret beauty. Before becoming a guide, I worked as a private school teacher for more than 30 years. During that time, I studied the cultural differences between East and West, including history, religion, art, architecture, gardens, and ways of thinking. Today, I continue this work not only as a guide, but also as a writer exploring the invisible connections between Japanese and Western culture. My tours are not simply “information tours.” I prefer to guide through storytelling. Why are Japanese gardens so quiet and peaceful? Why do Zen temples use empty space so beautifully? Why does Kyoto architecture feel so gentle and natural compared with many Western buildings? Through stories, humor, history, and everyday cultural details, I hope to make Kyoto feel alive and personal for my guests. Whether you are deeply interested in culture, photography, architecture, spirituality, or simply wish to enjoy Kyoto at a slower and more meaningful pace, I would be very happy to explore this beautiful city together with you.

I am not only a licensed guide with over a decade of experience guiding more than 1,000 private tours across Kyoto and Nara—I am also the author of The Hidden Language of Beauty: A Journey through Western and Japanese Ways of Seeing. (Kindle amazon) My tours go beyond explaining temples and shrines. Together, we explore the deeper ideas that shaped Kyoto: why Japanese gardens feel so peaceful, how architecture creates harmony with nature, why simplicity can be more powerful than decoration, and how Japanese aesthetics differ from those of the West. The clients of this tour have some limitation about time, so destinations and itineraries are tailored case by case. Please let me know your port, arrival time and departure time. I recommend using bullet train when your tour starts at Kobe.

Exceptional tour guide. Very kind, respectful. Very knowledgeable on history of Japan.
We booked an unforgettable private custom tour with Mike. He met us at our port in Osaka and we travelled by train to Kyoto. We went to the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kiyomizu, Ninenzaka, Sanenzaka, Arashiyama Tenryuji, Bamboo forest, Golden Temple, Gion area and saw Geisha women, Genkoan area, Mike surprised us and went to the beautiful Keishunin Temple for a traditional tea ceremony and the Miracle rock. Mike arranged a private driver and van to tour the 4 of us Canadians around Kyoto as we only had one day there and wanted to see all the highlights and World Heritage sites. The tour was 11.5 hours long. Mike took us to his favourite famous small restaurant for lunch. Mike escorted us back to Osaka to the Dotonbori area, an entertainment experience! We experienced the culture, history and art! Mike is very knowledgeable about each location. We highly recommend Mike as a guide.
Mike yhank you for the most educational fun tour you are very patient with us we were to maximize our day seeing the best places yet considering our physical limitations I will send friends your way again thank you for making our Osaka trip memorable
Masaki was an excellent tour guide who took us to several temples which were less crowded than some of Kyoto’s better known sites. His commentary and knowledge of Japanese history made our tour very enjoyable.
This was the second time that we have had a tour with Mike in the Kyoto area. Mike is an amazing guide who is extremely knowledgeable about the history, art, architecture and culture of the area, and he has a warm personality and is a pleasure to travel with! On this tour we started in Kyoto and did a day trip to Uji for a matcha tea ceremony and then went on to see the sights in Nara, (stopping for a fun lunch and sake tasting along the way!) On our first visit to Kyoto, Mike took our family on an off the beaten path tour of Southern and Northern Higashiyama, as well as a fun walk along the Path of Philosophy. Some of our favorite family photos were taken by Mike on this trip! I highly recommend Mike as a guide for your visit to Kyoto - his tours are truly special, and you will come away from the experience with great memories, knowledge and a new friend as well.
