Hello and welcome to Kyoto! My name is Mike, and I would love to share the beauty of Japan with you — not only as a tour guide, but also as a storyteller and writer. Kyoto is famous for its temples, shrines, gardens, and World Heritage Sites. But the true charm of Kyoto lies in its rich diversity. Of course, we can visit the famous places loved by visitors from around the world. Yet just a few steps away from the crowded tourist spots, there are often quiet hidden temples, peaceful gardens, and small streets where the spirit of old Kyoto still lives softly. I always hope my guests can experience both sides of Kyoto — the well-known beauty and the secret beauty. Before becoming a guide, I worked as a private school teacher for more than 30 years. During that time, I studied the cultural differences between East and West, including history, religion, art, architecture, gardens, and ways of thinking. Today, I continue this work not only as a guide, but also as a writer exploring the invisible connections between Japanese and Western culture. My tours are not simply “information tours.” I prefer to guide through storytelling. Why are Japanese gardens so quiet and peaceful? Why do Zen temples use empty space so beautifully? Why does Kyoto architecture feel so gentle and natural compared with many Western buildings? Through stories, humor, history, and everyday cultural details, I hope to make Kyoto feel alive and personal for my guests. Whether you are deeply interested in culture, photography, architecture, spirituality, or simply wish to enjoy Kyoto at a slower and more meaningful pace, I would be very happy to explore this beautiful city together with you.

Overview of your Nara tour

Nara was the first capital of Japan until 800. Nara, a place of profound significance for the Japanese, is often referred to as the 'Japanese soul town ', the very birthplace of Shinto and the essence of Japanese identity. Here are some examples of Nara attractions. Nara-machi is located downtown in Nara. This is a preserved traditional townscape with restaurants, handcraft shops, temples & shrines, a sake tasting shop, museums and culture centres. I recommend visiting Nara-machi before going to Nara Park to enjoy the various faces of this city. Nara Park has three world heritage sites and several other attractions, including Ukimido. Todaiji Great Buddha Hall, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and Ukimido are indispensable to visit. Of course, you cannot talk of Nara Park without referring to its deer. They politely bow before eating. Please return your bow to them. If you still have some time, it will be delightful to visit Horyuji, Japan's first world heritage site, the oldest wooden building in the world.

Our family has now taken 8 different tourbylocals in different cities. Some good, some great but this tour with Mike had something else…meaning. He knew how to move through the city unlike anyone I had ever seen navigate public transport. We had a big itinerary for a full day, he moved as if he sensed the perfect pace based on all EIGHT people’s energy level and when the next train was coming. He understood the cities and the Japanese culture in a way that was really next level. It was not just here is a building and when it was built, it was the depth of the buildings significance and then a kind smile. And then “let’s go” and we were off once again. 3 days later, our 11 year old our 20 year old and me, the 50 year old, all essentially tell the same tale; when we return to Japan, one of the reasons will be to take another tour with this special man. Listen and learn a thing or two, it’s why you want a guide anyhoo

Our day in Nara with Mike was absolutely wonderful. He accompanied us on the train from Kyoto to Uni and Nara where he showed us fascinating sites and beautiful parks, including spots that were NOT touristy (which we loved). The natural beauty of both cities was incredible. Mike is a wonderful teacher with a deep knowledge of Japanese history and culture, and was so patient answering all our many questions. We had such a good time with him and learned so much! We loved him!

Our day trip to Nara with Mike was great- he made the train travel a flawless experience and Mike provided so much information on the history and culture of the area and significance of the Shrines. He found some unique lunch spots (to us, not to him). Mike made great recommendations for dinner- truly a genuine and local experience !!

We had the most incredible experience in Nara, all thanks to our amazing tour guide, Mike! From the moment we met, his warm and welcoming demeanor set the tone for an unforgettable day. He resides in Nara so he is deeply knowledgeable about Nara's history and culture but also shared fascinating stories that brought the city’s rich heritage to life. What truly stood out was his genuine passion for the Kyoto region. Mike went above and beyond, tailoring the experience to our interests and even recommending other places to avoid crowds. His kindness, humor, and professionalism made this tour a highlight of our trip to Japan. If you’re planning to explore Nara, do yourself a favor and book a tour with Mike (Masaki). It will be an experience you’ll cherish forever!

We loved spending our day with Masaki. We would give him a 10 star rating if we could. He was knowledgeable, delightful and engaging. We learned so much about the history and culture of Japan, that we were able to appreciate the temples and shrines in other parts of the country so much more. Truly and amazing day. Thank you.
