Hello, and welcome to East Kent! I find local history fascinating and have a wealth of stories and anecdotes to share of my local area. I am also a keen walker, enjoying good strolls in interesting places. Finally, I like a good glass of real beer - in fact I brew my own. Combining these three pleasures, I refer to my tours as ‘TrAles’. They are historical walking tours with ale! We will rest from our walk in traditional English pubs to sample fine ales. If you’re not into ale, don’t worry. You will enjoy the pubs and can select other refreshment. Professionally, I have been involved in science education for many years and still lead professional development opportunities for educators. As a result, I have developed excellent presentation skills, and these should be evident as I lead you on a walking adventure. So, join me for a TrAle in historic East Kent. I guarantee there will be some surprises and with a good walk, interesting stories and fine ales, what is there not to like?

• A short walk will take us to the heart of this busy town before we drop into a popular micropub for our first sample of local ale. • Heading past the Castle and through the former barracks we will delve into the history of Britain’s elite Royal Marines. • A second rest in a traditional English pub will allow us a taste of fine ales brewed just a few miles away. • Next stop is the sea front – where Romans first landed, famous artists captured beach scenes, and the sea was thronged with shipping. • Passing the historic Time Ball Tower and Pier, we will stop for a light lunch in the hotel where Lord Horatio Nelson engaged in trysts. • More stories unfold as we move into the labyrinth of back streets where illegal imports were hidden away. A fourth pause in a smugglers’ pub will be a welcome respite. • Our final stretch will take us past the grave of Nelson’s close comrade before reaching an old inn, close to our starting point, where Charles Dickens stayed. It is now a popular taproom serving craft beers.
