As a resident of Canterbury for over20 years, it is a place close to my heart and one that I never tire of. I first visited here as a child and remember being taken into the nave of the cathedral, standing there in awe of its magnificent structure. Since then I have travelled, studied and settled here. Now a Blue Badge Tour Guide and Cathedral guide (I have completed the Cathedral's training course and therefore one of their own guides), it would be my great pleasure to extend to you my enthusiasm for this city. If ever a place was steeped in history, it's Canterbury! At its heart is the Cathedral. Part of a World Heritage Site, it goes back to 597AD when it was the first cathedral to be built here. It is now the mother church of the Anglican community across the world. From the spiritual to the secular. We'll follow in the footsteps of pilgrims, including those of The Canterbury Tales. You'll hear about the characters, the sights, the sounds and humour as we stroll the medieval streets.
Meet at your local Canterbury hotel or train station, short walk into Canterbury city centre. - The Cathedral. A fully guided tour, to include all main parts of the building, the nave, crypt, martyrdom, quire, shrine area, the life of Thomas Becket, stained glass windows. Explore the life of the monks in the precincts. - Please note that there can be closures of parts or whole of the Cathedral from time to time. Exit cathedral with a short coffee break if you would like. - Discover the web of medieval streets to include- - Butchery Lane and its links to the Romans. - The Rush Market and daily life in medieval times. - Palace street with connections to the sailing of The Mayflower in 1620 -The bustling High Street, with the Weavers' House and 14th century Westgate Tower - Opportunities to take photos throughout the tour.
