Geneva financial history starts in the middle Ages with the trade fairs, famous in Western Europe especially for the trade of precious goods. The first bank, founded by the Florence Medici family, leaves the city in the 1460's and is replaced more than three centuries later by the protestant bank, whose vestiges can be still identified in the local private banks. In the meantime the city has become an important business center owing to the influx of protestant refugees who have brought new professions, namely the one of watchmaker, or developed the existing ones, like the one of banker. Despite the catastrophic impact of the French Revolution Geneva has been able to recover after entering the Swiss confederation in 1815. Presently it is the second financial center in Switzerland and the sixth in the world. This visit will cover the different stages of the bank development allowing you to become acquainted with the historical area and the different architectural styles of the local banks.
