At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Lugano tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Lugano for every interest, including:

Layover tours: On a short layover, meet at the train station for a loop through Parco Ciani and Piazza della Riforma, then ride the funicular to Monte Brè or San Salvatore for lake views before your timed return. Your guide keeps an eye on the clock and local traffic so you get back for your train or flight without stress.

Food and Drink tours: Taste Merlot del Ticino in a lakeside enoteca and sit down to polenta and braised beef at a traditional grotto in the Castagnola neighbourhood. Add a sweet stop at the Alprose Chocolate Museum in Caslano or follow the Olive Tree Trail to Gandria for tastings in a village osteria.

Family tours: Mix a boat ride to Morcote with time in Parco Scherrer and a gelato break, or head to Swissminiatur in Melide and the Lido di Lugano for swimming and pedal boats. For active kids, your guide can plan a day that includes Monte Tamaro’s adventure park and easy trails with plenty of playground stops.

Lugano’s centre is walkable and well served by buses and funiculars, but the hills can be tiring; for hilltop villages and outings with strollers or gear, you can book chauffeured tours or ask about tours with private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Lugano inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Lugano

Use Lugano as your base and slip into nearby cities, valleys, and lakeside towns on easy day trips, choosing routes and stops that match your pace and interests with your tour.

Bellinzona: Step into a compact capital lined with three UNESCO-listed castles and stout stone walls, where short uphill walks lead to wide views, and the old town lanes make a relaxed loop for photos and a simple grotto meal; great if you like history, architecture, and straightforward sightseeing without long drives.

Locarno and Ascona: Follow the lake north to palm-lined promenades, Piazza Grande, and mellow village streets, then mix art spaces with espresso stops and a ferry hop along the shore; your tour can balance light walking with time at Madonna del Sasso for a view over the rooftops, ideal if you enjoy culture, lakeside scenes, and easygoing days.

Verzasca Valley and Lavertezzo: Trade city energy for stone hamlets, a famous arched bridge, and clear pools set in smooth rock, with short hikes that stay close to the river and slow photo breaks where the water turns emerald; this suits you if you want nature, swimming in summer, and quiet village corners, and your tour can plan safe swim spots and crowd-free times.

Lake Como (Como, Bellagio, or Menaggio): Cross the border quickly with ID on hand and blend Italian piazzas with ferry rides and mountain-backed views, browsing Como’s cathedral area, then cruising to Bellagio’s stepped lanes or Menaggio’s waterfront; your tour can focus on design shops, food stops, or villa viewpoints, making it a flexible pick for food lovers and casual shoppers.

Monte Generoso and Mendrisio: Ride up to a panoramic ridge for wide Alpine vistas, then drop into Mendrisio’s old centre and nearby vineyards for Ticino merlot and stone-vaulted cellars, keeping walks short if you prefer; this day pairs scenery with local flavour, and your tour can choose the right mix of viewpoints and tastings.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Lugano most travellers miss.
