Murcia, the regional capital, is located in the heart of the Segura Valley, an oasis in one of the driest areas in Europe. Founded by the Moors in the 9th century AD, this city will delight you since the very beginning. We will visit its gorgeous Cathedral (entrance fee not included). It was completed in 1467 although work continued on its construction up until the 18th century, which is why it is made of a variety of artistic styles. It has a bell tower 95 meters high which took over two hundred years to build and is the tallest of its kind in Spain. The Chapel of Los Vélez has a flamboyant Gothic style and a star-shaped vault. The Gentleman's Club, known in the city as "Royal Casino", has witnessed the social life of Murcia since the 19th century. Every room is inspired by a different place in Europe. You should not miss the English Library and the Rococo Ball Room. The best views of the city can be enjoyed from the Baroque "Fuensanta Sanctuary", built in a natural park.
Depart from the pier of Cartagena by coach for the one-hour journey through the foothills of the Sierra de Carrascoy. Your first stop will be at the Cathedral of Murcia, built between the 14th and 18th centuries, on the grounds of where an Arab mosque once stood. Then we will proceed to visit the gorgeous Casino (Gentleman's Club), where we can admire many different styles in just one building. Once we have finished we will make our way to the Fuensanta Sanctuary. The Monastery of the Virgin of Fuensanta (the Patron of Murcia) boasts wonderful views of the city & surrounding land. Built in the natural park known as "El Valle", the church is considered to be one of the finest examples of Murcian baroque. Here you Will have some free time to explore on your own or buy a local gift in a shop run by benedictine nuns. After that we will drive back to the port.
