I'm a documentary journalist who loves history, food, and sharing hidden parts of Japan with others. With me, you'll get a deep dive into the country with someone who speaks fluent Japanese and can explain not only the “whats” and “whens” of what we see, but more importantly, the “why”, and the deep connections between Japan of previous centuries and today’s society. I hold a B.A. in Religious Studies with a focus on Buddhism from the University of Virginia, and an M.A. from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. I am also an ordained lay monk at the UNESCO World Heritage Kinpusenji Temple. I’m a member of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ) and have spent years working with international media outlets, including Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK. I live with my wife and dog in a traditional Japanese home in the mountains of Nara and have years of professional guiding experience. It would be an honor to help you discover the adventure and beauty of Japan.

Before Tokyo and Kyoto, there was Nara. On this tour, you will discover Japan’s ancient capital and learn about the beginnings of Japan. Nara emerged at a time when neighboring cultures in China and Korea were flourishing, and we’ll explore how this broader Asian cultural exchange helped shape Japan into what it is today. You’ll visit the best spots to see Nara’s sacred deer and learn how Buddhism entered Japan, evolved, and continues to influence Japanese philosophy to this day.
1. Nara Park Take photos of Nara’s famous deer. Far from shy, they bow when given special crackers sold in the park. 2. Tōdai-ji Temple One of Japan’s most important temples, marking the origins of Buddhism and the early state. Built in the 8th century, it is one of the world’s largest wooden buildings and a symbol of national unity. 3. Kasuga Taisha A 1,300-year-old shrine set in a primeval forest. 4. Kōfuku-ji National Treasure Museum View exquisite sculptures and learn about esoteric Buddhism's development in Japan. 5. Naramachi Shopping Street Walk through a historic district blending traditional shops with modern life. 6. I recommend eating before the start of the tour, but if you'd prefer, we can eat together at the beginning or end of the tour with a lunch or drinks near the station. The best options are near the train station and this would be paid for by the guests.

This can all be covered by walking without the longest distance between destinations being around 20 minutes.
Nara, Nara, 630-8215, Japan
I will meet you in front of Kintetsu Nara Station. If you exit from the East Exit (Exit 2) from the station there is a water fountain with a statue of the Buddhist monk Gyoki that is a popular meeting point. I will meet you there.
