I have lived in Japan for over thirty years, working mainly as a producer and director, making documentaries on Japanese culture and history. I’ve been based in Japan’s ancient capital of Nara for 15 years, where I now create bespoke tours and walking experiences shaped by storytelling and my passion to introduce you to this wonderful town. Nara is a place of tranquility and depth with park and woodlands, shrines, temples and hidden pathways. History lingers and the seasons unfold with subtle beauty. I offer personalised journeys that reveal the Nara that few visitors encounter, which complement visits to the highlights and wonderful UNESCO World Heritage sites. I'm also happy to accommodate any special requests during your visit. Each experience is tailored to your interests, to create a deeper connection with Japanese history and culture, and to experience the best that Nara has to offer. • Walk through Nara’s park and primeval forested trails, encountering the herds of shika deer and the local sacred sites. • Experience bespoke photography tours, introducing seasonal nature and scenery, the beauty of the local shrine and temple architecture. • Visit charming rural villages, explore beautiful landscapes, scenery and vistas along regional trails in the areas surrounding Nara. • Discover the regional flavours of the seasons, tasting Nara's finest and healthiest cuisine, catered to your tastes and preferred ambience. If you’re drawn to landscapes with stories, to tranquil scenery and forested pathways, prefer fine and healthy dining, and enjoy moments that stay with you long after the journey ends, I’d be delighted to be your guide in Nara.

This tour is intended for photographers and enthusiasts seeking the finest scenery and locations to shoot fine art and nature scenes within Nara Park and Kasuga Primeval Forest. From secluded trails frequented by shika deer, to the UNESCO preserved primeval forest trails, with abundant varieties of trees and wildlife, and including hidden viewpoints of the main sacred sites and architecture of the ancient capital city of Japan. On longer walks we can venture to the peak of Mt. Wakakusa for panoramic views across Nara and potentially stunning sunset shots. We can also arrange a visit the Nara City Museum of Photography and other related photo sites depending on your interest in film prints and local cultural history. We will explore distinctive locations to enable the most artistic shots of your time in Nara, and to add more stunning artistic images to your portfolio.
- a customised route and itinerary with flexibility, according to your intentions and passion for art and nature photography. - will also consider weather conditions on the day and time of the walk, though there are sufficient and various photogenic spots to discover regardless of the weather and quality of light. - Sample route: from the meeting point to the fringes of Nara Park and Todaiji Temple, + discover the trails into Kasuga Forest towards the peak of Mt. Wakakusa, or through to Kasuga Taisha shrine + explore the forest’s abundant wildlife and tranquil scenery beyond the main shrine precinct + into the charming district of Takabatake, featuring lesser-visited UNESCO temples and associated shrines, with national treasure Buddhist statuary.

We will mainly be on foot, though I can also arrange private transport for access to more rural landscapes and locations that surround Nara Park.
