In 1993 a Swiss geology student, Iwan Stossel, discovered "Tetrapod" trackway fossil footprints on rocks on Valentia Island which were formed 385 million years ago. Tetrapod footprints are the oldest evidence in the world of vertebrates walking on land that would eventually become the human form . Such is the appeal of Valentia Island, the most westerly point of the continent of Europe, which is linked to the mainland at Portmagee. During my previous working life as a policeman I spent four years in this area and I have consistently found myself returning to Valentia and I have developed a keen interest and love of the area that draws me back.
