Derry Historical and Political Walking Tour

I started as a guide just after graduating from University of Ulster, having achieved a B. A Honours Degree Irish History and Politics. I enjoy explaining the history of Ireland and Derry to my guests.

That's the reason why this historical and political tour will incorporate Derry's Walls, the Bogside murals and Bloody Sunday. Our historical tour begins with St. Colmcille, the Nine Years War, the Plantation of Ulster, the Siege of Derry, the 1798 Rebellion and The Great Hunger and emigration.

The second half of the tour will take you into the heart of the Bogside district of Derry, the crucible of the modern day conflict in Ireland. This will begin at Free Derry Wall and take you round the Bogside murals and the site of the massacre of Bloody Sunday. My father was the 12th victim of Bloody Sunday, having been shot in the back and died moments later.

We'll finish at the Bloody Sunday monument in view of the Derry Walls, looking at the key periods leading up to and during the 'Troubles'.

Our tour begins in Letterkenny, the earlier the better as we have a lot of ground to cover! We'll head north through Mulroy Bay, headed for the Fanad peninsula (scene of many famous shipwrecks), where we'll stop at the lighthouse and try to see the coast of Canada or Iceland! Then it's off to the Murder Hole, a beach named for its treacherous currents, before reaching Doe Castle, home to the Mac Sweeney clan and a true Romeo and Juliet story! We can pause for a gourmet lunch on the shores of Sheephaven Bay at this point, after which we'll visit Horn Head with its celebrated Puffin colonies. Fortress City, the ancient walled city of Londonderry

Londonderry, the last walled city to be built in Europe, stands as the most complete and spectacular. It is part of a long European tradition of walled cities - it is really a city with walls around it rather than a heavily fortified citadel'. In 1604 King James the VI and I granted a charter for 'the town or borough of the Derrie being, by its natural state and situation, very commodious, and fit to a towne of warre and merchandise'.

The Walls of Derry, constructed between 1613 1618, are of course the most enduring legacy of the Plantation of Ulster. Still intact today, they are the only complete early modern walls in Ireland and Britain. Based on the model of Vitry le Francois at a time of European expansion, the plans were also used as a template to design Philadelphia. The walls were needed in earnest on at least three occasions suffering investments and sieges during the 17th century including the 'Great Siege' of 1688-9 as part of a European

Explore the beauty of Derry city with your local guide

Our tour will take us all around the city of Derry, also known as the Maiden City and Ireland's only remaining walled city. We'll begin in front of the Guildhall and proceed to walk around the old city atop the walls, from where we can view Saint Columb's Cathedral and many of the fascinating historical buildings in the city. Derry is a city steeped in history and stories, old and new, and we'll have plenty of time to explore both while we walk. After which we'll move down to the Bogside with its colourful murals and locals, to delve into Ireland's more troubled recent past, finishing up back at the Guildhall on the waterfront.

Good walking shoes or boots are recommended for this tour, I also carry water, tea and fruit for refreshments.

Sun Gods and U-Boats on the Inishowen Peninsula (Whale watching too if we're lucky!)

Our tour begins at the Grianan Aileach, a neolithic sun temple built to celebrate the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes. After delving into this part of our mysterious past, we'll proceed further into the peninsula and arrive at Fort Dunree, originally a Napoleonic Wars era installation, which was last used in WW1 in the fight against the U- Boats, the structure is now mostly abandoned, however, there is a small museum.

After an invigorating hike, we'll take a pause to enjoy a gourmet picnic in the vicinity, then it's on to Fort Lenan, which is a similar structure, however, it's completely abandoned as opposed to Fort Dunree. After this, we'll push on to the most northerly point in Ireland, Malin Head, if we're lucky we might be able to see whales and Basking Sharks off the coast here. On the return journey we'll follow the astonishingly beautiful coast road, which never disappoints, I can assure you!
All the while I'll regale you to all the mythology, documented history and folklore of the region.

There is an optional 15 minute refreshment stop included in the time. There is an option to have a wider walk around the city and in particular the Bogside area and look at many of the murals located there

Your guide's interests include birds and wild flowers. The main season for birds runs from late April to mid July and a visit to the RSPB Seabird Centre is recommended during this period. The walking is relaxed rather than energetic and the itinerary is customised to suit each group. Your guide will arrange your ferry travel and optional on-island bus, if required.
