Monet discovered the Italian Riviera in 1883, while on his way to Genova. Blown away by a palette of unknown colors, the unique light, and the overwhelming beauty of the area, he decided to come back in 1884 and spent several months by himself in Bordighera. At that time, the most beautiful town of the Italian Riviera was the destination of the English, Russian and French high society ; a garden town filled with sumptuous villas and hotels surrounded by a luxuriant exotic vegetation that he saw as a "garden paradise". Monet painted some of his great masterpieces there, but also in the surrounding areas such as the valley of Sasso, the splendid medieval village of Dolceacqua and Menton "the pearl of France" on the border. Today it's on an intimate journey through art, charm, colors and breathtaking beauty that I invite you, on the footsteps of one of all-time greatest master of fine arts. As the poet wrote "There all is order and beauty, luxury, peace, and pleasure. "
We will start with MENTON Located on the italian border every stone here smells Italy, from the old town to the famous market passing by the baroque masterpiece that his the St Michel square. We'll do the market as good italian or an honest frenchman would do, and impossible to start the day without an expresso by the sea ! Passing the border the next step will be BORDIGHERA Few places embodied as well the luxury and the charm of the victorian era. We will start by visiting the authentic Alta città with its narrow streets, its trattoria. . . before walking down the new borough and its incredible architectural legacy. Passing the valley of Sasso let's visit one of the highlights of Liguria, DOLCEACQUA. The first look at the medieval stronghold of the famous Doria family is a chock. The second one also. The inside brings you to another world, a mental image of the Middle ages. If you wish we can taste here the nice wines of Liguria.
