The Brief History of the Khmer Empire The Khmer Empire, also known as the Angkor Empire, was a powerful Southeast Asian state that dominated much of present-day Cambodia and vast areas of mainland Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th century. Here is an overview of the rise and fall of the Khmer Empire: 1. Foundation and Expansion: - The Khmer Empire was founded by King Jayavarman II in 802 AD when he declared independence from Java (an island in present-day Indonesia) and established his capital at Hariharalaya. - The empire reached its peak during the rule of King Suryavarman II (1113-1150), under whom the famous temple Angkor Wat was constructed. 2. Religion and Culture: - The Khmer Empire was predominantly influenced by Hinduism and later Buddhism. The empire's rulers built numerous temples and monuments, such as Angkor Wat and Bayon, showcasing intricate architectural and artistic skills. - Khmer rulers identified themselves as "devaraja" - god-kings who were believed to be earthly incarnations. We had a fantastic two days in Siem Reap with Sam Vuthy. He was very knowledgeable about the sites and the history of the Angkorian Empire, taking care to point out interesting details to us. It was very hot while we were there and he provided ice cold towels and water in the car to keep us cool which was a very thoughtful touch! He was patient when we took our time looking around the sites and provided us with lots of further information about life in Cambodia today! We very much enjoyed our conversations in the car between sites. Thank you Sam!

We had a fantastic two days with Sam as our tour guide. Sam is extremely knowledgeable about all if the temples and the fishing village. He is timely, helpful and has a funny and entertaining personality! As an added bonus, Sam directed and took the best pictures of our group. We highly recommend him and Tim, his driver, to anyone seeking a tailored and memorable tour through Angkor Wat!

Sam was out guide for two days in Siem Reap. He was extremely knowledgeable about the temples and was very flexible with us regarding visits. We had two kids with us and he was extremely understanding. He had his own car that was air conditioned and provided us not only with tons of information but a lot of cold water and towels. We had a great experience and learned a lot from Sam!

We went with Sovan, Sam's brother, instead of Sam. Sovan was terrific, with excellent historical knowledge and a superb ability to remember detailed dates (for dozens of locations) and specific details on every carving and statue and otherwise. He was very accommodating of our pace and requested changes in itinerary. We really appreciated his insights about Cambodian history and how it has affected the different historical sites. By late afternoon, we were spent but Sovan seemed to never tire. Our driver was excellent also, always ready for us and waiting with water and cold towels. We'd happily do another tour with Sovan.

Sam is so knowledgeable of the Angkor area, providing historical context and interesting insights about the construction and engineering of each site we visited. Sam pointed out the Hindu and Buddhist influences in the different temples and explained the background and meaning of the different symbols, structures and carvings. It was fascinating! Sam was the perfect guide for our group (4 adults and 5 children). He is always friendly and flexible and patient and, most importantly, he is a lot of fun!

What a delight to explore Angkor & area w/ Sam -- very knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, flexible, & patient (2 were 80 y/olds). Not only did we hit the main attraction, but we also explored other temples, incl. some off the beaten path. Sam could speak extensively about the history, construction, communal conflict, carvings, and also shared a lot with us about his own story and the ravages of war in Cambodia. A very warm personality and generous of spirit (and funny!) Highly recommend.
