The Brief History of the Khmer Empire The Khmer Empire, also known as the Angkor Empire, was a powerful Southeast Asian state that dominated much of present-day Cambodia and vast areas of mainland Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th century. Here is an overview of the rise and fall of the Khmer Empire: 1. Foundation and Expansion: - The Khmer Empire was founded by King Jayavarman II in 802 AD when he declared independence from Java (an island in present-day Indonesia) and established his capital at Hariharalaya. - The empire reached its peak during the rule of King Suryavarman II (1113-1150), under whom the famous temple Angkor Wat was constructed. 2. Religion and Culture: - The Khmer Empire was predominantly influenced by Hinduism and later Buddhism. The empire's rulers built numerous temples and monuments, such as Angkor Wat and Bayon, showcasing intricate architectural and artistic skills. - Khmer rulers identified themselves as "devaraja" - god-kings who were believed to be earthly incarnations. Sem entirely tailored the Temple tour to our needs as we had previously visited many of the major Temples on prior tours. He was enthusiastic, passionate, kind and very knowledgeable. Highest recommendation. Incredible sense of humor!
Sam was an outstanding guide for our family who really went beyond expectations!! We had an excellent experience touring Angkor Wat temples - smooth & punctual transport with air conditioned ride and cold waters. Sam knew the best places, explained the ancient carvings, taught us a lot about history & kept us comfortable. He squeezed in a stop at war memorial for us, as we wanted to know more about Cambodia’s history. It was a perfect day. One member of our group was ill, hospitalized, and missed the tour. Sam stayed in communication to help & show the temples despite their health limitations. They took a short tour & Sam shared lots of photos - excellent photographer. We relied on him for airport rides. 100% recommend Sam’s to other travelers. He is the one person you need to know in Cambodia for everything and we will always remember him fondly 🩷
Sam is a wonderful person and knowledgable guide. His tour added so much to our enjoyment and understanding the the fabulous, unique and beautiful temples that have been rescued from the jungle. We were picked up by Sam at 5 AM so that we could experience the great Angkor Wat slowly emerging out of the darkness. Magical! Based on the conversations we had as we toured the complex Sam changed our itinerary to include smaller, less crowded temples (one still encased in banyan trees) that came closer the experiences earlier visitors in the 20's and 30's had. We had a great experience with Sam and, with his help, have come away from Cambodia, Siem Reap and the Angkor temples with memories that will be with us for a long time!
Our guide Vuthy Sem had a good service and knew a lot about the history of anghor wat but also a of international topics. He was very profesional and friendly. His english was also great, so we could understand everything.
We had an amazing time with Sam! He was informative and engaging, and incredibly flexible. He was really able to give you a personalised experience of Siem Reap, one you are likely never to forget. I would recommend him to any first time traveller to Cambodia. Best trip we've ever been on!
Sem is a fabulous tour guide who is very knowledgeable. He told the history of the Angkor palace and temples very well with added humor and was considerate of our pace in the heat providing lots of cold water and icy towels. He stages excellent photo opportunities then takes great photos for you. We have used many tour guides on our travels and he has been the best. We highly recommend Sem to take you on tours in Cambodia.
