The Brief History of the Khmer Empire The Khmer Empire, also known as the Angkor Empire, was a powerful Southeast Asian state that dominated much of present-day Cambodia and vast areas of mainland Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th century. Here is an overview of the rise and fall of the Khmer Empire: 1. Foundation and Expansion: - The Khmer Empire was founded by King Jayavarman II in 802 AD when he declared independence from Java (an island in present-day Indonesia) and established his capital at Hariharalaya. - The empire reached its peak during the rule of King Suryavarman II (1113-1150), under whom the famous temple Angkor Wat was constructed. 2. Religion and Culture: - The Khmer Empire was predominantly influenced by Hinduism and later Buddhism. The empire's rulers built numerous temples and monuments, such as Angkor Wat and Bayon, showcasing intricate architectural and artistic skills. - Khmer rulers identified themselves as "devaraja" - god-kings who were believed to be earthly incarnations. You know your guide is good when at peak season, he brings you to must see sites when they are least crowded, he knows the best photo vantage point for each site at each time of day at any time of the year and other certified guides greet him multiple times a day, (because he taught them) . He is knowledgeable, (taught at a university) , kind , flexible and can answer any question. I sensed his guiding came from a deep love for and pride in Cambodia' culture and history which I was grateful to benefit from.

The temples on this tour are a lifetime "must-see" and Sam was an excellent guide for our explorations. Not only were his insights and language skills strong, but his experience helped us to see even more than we expected. Before visiting the main Angkor Wat site, for example, Sam told us that a sunrise start and less-used entrance would give us access all to ourselves for the start of the day. Which we interpreted to mean that we would be sharing the site with a manageably small number of other visitors. But we actually did have an area of the Angkor Wat complex literally all to ourselves to start the day. We really appreciated this and other extras throughout our tour!

Had a great 3 day tour with Sam. He was attentive and answered all our questions. He took us to the beautiful sunrise at Angkor Watt and knew all the best places to be and when for the best pictures. We enjoyed his thorough knowledge of all the temples, writings,Cambodian history, and love of his country. Took us to the Phnom Kulen Waterfalls and TonleSap Lake per our request. His driver also was very good, and that's not easy in some parts.đŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł. Don't hold back and pick Sam for your guide. You won't regret it!!

Sam was an outstanding and very knowledgeable tour guide. In addition he was punctual. If you are more than two adults (ex.: 2 adult couples), do request a van instead of the small SUV.

Our 3 day tour with Sam in Siem Reap was excellent. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Sam was amazing! We definitely feel we got so much more from our visit because of the information Sam provided. We will book with Sam again if we ever have the opportunity to return.
