The Brief History of the Khmer Empire The Khmer Empire, also known as the Angkor Empire, was a powerful Southeast Asian state that dominated much of present-day Cambodia and vast areas of mainland Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th century. Here is an overview of the rise and fall of the Khmer Empire: 1. Foundation and Expansion: - The Khmer Empire was founded by King Jayavarman II in 802 AD when he declared independence from Java (an island in present-day Indonesia) and established his capital at Hariharalaya. - The empire reached its peak during the rule of King Suryavarman II (1113-1150), under whom the famous temple Angkor Wat was constructed. 2. Religion and Culture: - The Khmer Empire was predominantly influenced by Hinduism and later Buddhism. The empire's rulers built numerous temples and monuments, such as Angkor Wat and Bayon, showcasing intricate architectural and artistic skills. - Khmer rulers identified themselves as "devaraja" - god-kings who were believed to be earthly incarnations.
