Being the newest member of the Memphis ToursByLocals team it is a pleasure to offer experiences that will introduce you to this fascinating area. By nature I am an historian so the tours I traditionally offer highlight the past of Memphis, its birth and cotton-fueled explosive growth, decimation by yellow fever and resulting resurgence. To quote Southern vernacular, you will be "properly Introduced" to my city, my area, its rich history and its colorful cast of characters. As fascinating as Memphis is, you may also want to experience the West Tennessee Old South homes and antebellum plantation estates of those who lived and built during the "Moonlight and Magnolias" era when cotton was king of the Southern and the American economy. The tours I have selected are designed to be personal and thought provoking. Being a fifth generation Mid-Southerner I have a passion to teach you about our local culture, the how and why we exist as a people, to introduce you to who we are by examining who we were and how we became the city you are visiting. Let me confirm a couple of stereotypes of Southern hospitality and story telling while together we discover the charms of my community. Wherever possible, my tours have some built in flexibility which allows customization around your specific interests. Message me with any questions and interests and I will recommend any changes and additions that will personalize your tour. This tour will introduce you to a bevy of Memphis characters, men and women that distinguished themselves through treachery, greed and general abhorrent behavior. Some stories are hilarious, some are heinous but all are of significant historical interest to Memphis and the nation. You will meet assassins, kidnappers, mobsters, madams and other assorted scoundrels. This tour is great fun, entertaining and highly interesting. I have been conducting this tour for five years and it is consistently a favorite of my clients. We will visit the graves of the little old lady who was quite possibly America's most prolific serial killer, a man who kept the embalmed body of an assassin in his basement for 20 years, a beautiful Confederate spy who talked her way out of several Union prisons and many, many more. The great Southern tradition of story-telling will be on full display here!!
- This tour normally begins Downtown on foot for about one hour. - We will then travel by car to various parts of town with the most time spend at historic and bucolic Elmwood Cemetery. - We will end up at Brewer's Boarding House and the Lorraine Motel for an in-depth discussion of the 1968 Martin Luther King assassination, the resulting 2-month international manhunt for James Earl Ray, and the various unanswered questions and conspiracy theories associated with the case. The meeting point will be wherever is most convenient to you and drop-off will be anywhere you like. We will spend 4 hours together and can extend the trip at your desire. Message me in order so we can begin a discussion on how to give you the most interesting introduction to Memphis.
