Being the newest member of the Memphis ToursByLocals team it is a pleasure to offer experiences that will introduce you to this fascinating area. By nature I am an historian so the tours I traditionally offer highlight the past of Memphis, its birth and cotton-fueled explosive growth, decimation by yellow fever and resulting resurgence. To quote Southern vernacular, you will be "properly Introduced" to my city, my area, its rich history and its colorful cast of characters. As fascinating as Memphis is, you may also want to experience the West Tennessee Old South homes and antebellum plantation estates of those who lived and built during the "Moonlight and Magnolias" era when cotton was king of the Southern and the American economy. The tours I have selected are designed to be personal and thought provoking. Being a fifth generation Mid-Southerner I have a passion to teach you about our local culture, the how and why we exist as a people, to introduce you to who we are by examining who we were and how we became the city you are visiting. Let me confirm a couple of stereotypes of Southern hospitality and story telling while together we discover the charms of my community. Wherever possible, my tours have some built in flexibility which allows customization around your specific interests. Message me with any questions and interests and I will recommend any changes and additions that will personalize your tour. Overview of your Memphis tour

The battle of Shiloh was America's bloodiest battle to that date. Two days of intensive fighting are remarkably told and experienced on this tour of one of the best preserved battlefields in the National Park Service. Any understanding of this nation should include the knowledge you will gain by understanding the battle that altered the course of a war and changed the trajectory of American history. On April 6 and 7, 1862 over 100, 000 Confederate and Union troops slammed into each other at this unlikely venue. Both North and South expected this confrontation to ultimately decide the Civil War and bring about its hasty conclusion. What ultimately happened could not have been farther from those hopes. The Battle of Shiloh stunned the nation and ushered in a horrifying reality that the conflict would be long, very bloody as well as heartbreaking to all Americans. Shiloh battlefield is a driving tour with multiple stops that will include some light walking.

John collected us on time and drove us to the battle field in pouring rain. I am glad he was driving ! Watched an excellent 40 minute film of the battle at the tourist office which helped you get a feel of the 2 days of fighting. After an early lunch we drove around the battlefield , walked around and really got a sense of the layout and the background of how it unfolded. John is very knowledgeable regarding the entire civil war with many back stories of characters and incidents that made it come alive. We highly recommend the tour and John. We had an excellent day and learnt so much. Thank you for an outstanding day.

One of the best tours we have ever been on. John describes in detail the history leading up to the Civil War, the events that led to Shiloh, the personalities and the politics. Gave us vivid detail of the heartbreaking and tragic mistakes on both sides. Drove us around the area and pointed out historical homes and why they are important. Really gave you the feeling of being there April 1862!! Cannot say enough great things about John. Take this tour - you will learn so much. P.S. Thanks for Hagy"s!!!

John is an excellent tour guide! He is so knowledgeable about Memphis, the surrounding areas, Tennessee as a whole, and the Civil War. I gifted this tour to my Dad for his 70th birthday, and John led my Dad, my son (age 10), and myself on the Battle of Shiloh tour. We all loved it! John showed us not only the battlefield itself, but also small areas of note around the battlefield, including beautiful antebellum homes where Grant and Sherman stayed during the war. I highly recommend a tour with John!

What a delightful tour! The Shiloh National Military Park is a beautifully marked area with the terrain and monuments. Having John provide commentary was an added bonus. We learned valuable details that changed our perspectives about the Civil War. John is a true Southern gentleman who definitely took care of every request. He is a good communicator and provided ideas for reading and restaurants to help us plan. He is very knowledgeable. We also loved the catfish lunch! I highly recommend him!
