Being the newest member of the Memphis ToursByLocals team it is a pleasure to offer experiences that will introduce you to this fascinating area. By nature I am an historian so the tours I traditionally offer highlight the past of Memphis, its birth and cotton-fueled explosive growth, decimation by yellow fever and resulting resurgence. To quote Southern vernacular, you will be "properly Introduced" to my city, my area, its rich history and its colorful cast of characters. As fascinating as Memphis is, you may also want to experience the West Tennessee Old South homes and antebellum plantation estates of those who lived and built during the "Moonlight and Magnolias" era when cotton was king of the Southern and the American economy. The tours I have selected are designed to be personal and thought provoking. Being a fifth generation Mid-Southerner I have a passion to teach you about our local culture, the how and why we exist as a people, to introduce you to who we are by examining who we were and how we became the city you are visiting. Let me confirm a couple of stereotypes of Southern hospitality and story telling while together we discover the charms of my community. Wherever possible, my tours have some built in flexibility which allows customization around your specific interests. Message me with any questions and interests and I will recommend any changes and additions that will personalize your tour. The battle of Shiloh was America's bloodiest battle to that date. Two days of intensive fighting are remarkably told and experienced on this tour of one of the best preserved battlefields in the National Park Service. Any understanding of this nation should include the knowledge you will gain by understanding the battle that altered the course of a war and changed the trajectory of American history. On April 6 and 7, 1862 over 100, 000 Confederate and Union troops slammed into each other at this unlikely venue. Both North and South expected this confrontation to ultimately decide the Civil War and bring about its hasty conclusion. What ultimately happened could not have been farther from those hopes. The Battle of Shiloh stunned the nation and ushered in a horrifying reality that the conflict would be long, very bloody as well as heartbreaking to all Americans. Shiloh battlefield is a driving tour with multiple stops that will include some light walking.
> The trip to Shiloh will be approximately 2 hours but with interesting stops and photo ops along the way. > At the National Park, we will tour the museum and watch a short movie about the battle. > We will then tour part of the battlefield and then break for lunch. > After lunch, we will continue on a more detailed inspection of the points of interest and discuss various theories about what happened and why. > Particular attention will concern the many tactical errors on both sides that could have proved consequential to the war's outcome. > At tour's end we will begin our 90 minute drive to return to Memphis.
