Being the newest member of the Memphis ToursByLocals team it is a pleasure to offer experiences that will introduce you to this fascinating area. By nature I am an historian so the tours I traditionally offer highlight the past of Memphis, its birth and cotton-fueled explosive growth, decimation by yellow fever and resulting resurgence. To quote Southern vernacular, you will be "properly Introduced" to my city, my area, its rich history and its colorful cast of characters. As fascinating as Memphis is, you may also want to experience the West Tennessee Old South homes and antebellum plantation estates of those who lived and built during the "Moonlight and Magnolias" era when cotton was king of the Southern and the American economy. The tours I have selected are designed to be personal and thought provoking. Being a fifth generation Mid-Southerner I have a passion to teach you about our local culture, the how and why we exist as a people, to introduce you to who we are by examining who we were and how we became the city you are visiting. Let me confirm a couple of stereotypes of Southern hospitality and story telling while together we discover the charms of my community. Wherever possible, my tours have some built in flexibility which allows customization around your specific interests. This tour will introduce you some of the lesser-known but fascinating areas and sights of Memphis. We will travel to venues that possess awe-inspiring beauty as well as historical significance to the area. If you have a sense of adventure and enjoy discovering hidden treasures, this tour is for you. Being a fifth generation Mid-Southerner I have a passion to teach you about our local culture, the how and why we exist as a people, and introduce you to who we are by examining who we were and how we became the city you are visiting.
We had such an enjoyable tour with John. He was so interesting and provided lots of history and lots of Memphis color. We made it to all the sites requested. John was great in scheduling all the stops and provided insider information and tips! It was a great tour and would recommend John!!
This is a wonderful tour. John is extremely knowledgeable and clearly loves Memphis. He is so willing to tailor the tour to show you the places you want to see. And his selection of a restaurant for lunch was amazing - we loved it. We can't recommend John enough!!
An incredible detailed complete Memphis tour excluding Graceland, which you should tour on your own. John knows everything about Memphis, history, places, schools, parks. He knows where to take you for food, music history, nice neighborhoods, etc. I do completely recommend him for a Memphis tour. And it was not too long.
John Matthews is a fantastic guide. He is hugely knowledgeable about his city and a pleasure to spend time with. He is flexible with the tour and able to answer every question we had, whether on music, politics , history etc His enthusiasm for his city is infectious and we found ourselves engaged in whatever he wanted to show us. We learned a great deal and enjoyed his company. If you are looking to undertake a tour of Memphis I could not recommend John more highly.
John's in-depth knowledge brought Memphis to life and the tour was very much enjoyed. The music history, MLK and downtown, as well as some of the surrounding suburban areas plus lunch at a soul food restaurant made the day well worthwhile. We highly recommend a tour with John if you are in the Memphis area. We were with John on our third day in Memphis and he completed and added so much to our understanding of Memphis and the history made there. John is passionate about what he does and is an engaging story teller. We hope to take another of John's tours when we are next in the area!
The meeting point will be wherever is most convenient to you and drop-off will be anywhere you like. - This tour normally begins Downtown on foot for about one hour. - We will then travel by car to some of my favorite places that are off of the beaten path. We will spend 4 hours together and can extend the trip at your desire. Places of interest include but are not limited to: . Front Street - the Cotton Capitol of the World . Beale Street - Blues and "The Main Street of Black America" . Pinch District . Lorraine Motel along with detailed examination of the King assassination conspiracies . Sun Studios - Where Rock and Roll was born . Stax Museum of American Soul Music This is a highly flexible tour that can be adapted to your personal interests.
