Kansas City - Plaza Fountain & Sculptures - Holiday Lights Walking Tour

Join me on a walking tour of the famous Kansas City Plaza. The holidays are a perfect time to see the Plaza all lit up in Holiday Cheer. Here, you'll learn about how this Midwest high end shopping district came from pig farms and factories in the early 1920's through the vision of one man, J. C. Nicholas. When I was a child, my family would go "for a drive" for fun, and this was my favorite place to drive through because it's so beautiful, and what my young self considered "fancy". Sometimes we'd stop for a picnic near the fountain park. Holiday season always included an annual drive-by to see the lights that outlined the entire 15 blocks of buildings. Truly stunning. With over 80 fountains (2nd only to Rome!) and statues, we will see renditions of Pomona the Roman Goddess of Vineyards, the Roman God Bacchus and many more. Every fountain and statue has a story and I truly enjoy sharing them with you. I hope you'll join me when you're here in Kansas City.

·Once we meet, our first stop will be at the most famous fountain in Mill Creek Park. From here we'll be able to see where it all began in the 1920's as the first planned shopping area to include access for automobiles. ·Besides this, I'll point out the elements of Spanish influence in building structures & rooftops throughout the area. ·We'll then see the Giralda Tower and the ornate traffic island created by Bernhard Zuckerman. ·Next we'll walk into the Plaza's heart and see works like (just naming a few): -Neptune -Emilio Zocchi's "Michelangelo as a boy" -life size bronze Eagle by Lorenzo Ghiglieri -Beautiful and intricately cast iron light posts -Bronze Penguins By Kraft ·We'll go through each block discovering the statues & fountains along the way. Don't forget to look up & see the architecture! ·Along the way, I'll be sharing my favorite places to eat & shop so that you can return and enjoy at your leisure. We can even pause for coffee or ice-cream! ·At last we'll end back at the starting point.
