Discover South Florida with the Historian and Planner Who Helped Shape ItNo one knows or loves the physical environment of South Florida more than I do. Armed with a landscape architecture degree from Cornell, I dedicated my early career to architectural history and preservation. I coined the term "Miami Modern" (MiMo), co-wrote the definitive books Miami Modern Revealed and Miami Architecture, and helped establish the historic districts protecting these iconic landmarks. To truly understand Fort Lauderdale, you must know Miami. Born of the Gilded Age, they are sibling cities sharing an exclusive membership in the American subtropical landscape. While Miami evolved into a global hub, Fort Lauderdale grew as a uniquely American reaction to it—a fascinating "secondary city" mirroring the dynamic between Philadelphia and New York. This lifetime of expertise culminated in my twelve-year tenure as the Lead Planner for the City of Fort Lauderdale, where I personally guided the development of our modern skyline. I DON'T JUST KNOW MIAMI AND FORT LAUDERDALE, I HELPED SHAPE THEM.

Overview of your Fort Lauderdale tour

This is a unique opportunity to discover an inspiring body of work frozen in time. Some great talents arise in the spotlight. Others arise in obscurity, are discovered and the spotlight finds them. Still other great talents arise in obscurity, achieve local success but are never discovered, never celebrated at a scale to match their outsize talent. Charles McKirahan and his body of work is one of the latter. Though he was successful by any measure designing numerous buildings and entire districts in the Venice of America, as well as hotels in the Bahamas and Ecuador, Fort Lauderdale in the Postwar decades was even less of a dateline than it is today. Charles McKirahan was not just an architect, engineer and planner, his work reveals the heart and mind of an artist. 60 years after his untimely passing, what you will discover on this tour you may find find intoxicating. I speak from experience. 10 years after I first tasted this vintage its power to inspire and delight has only increased.
