Hi! I am Gaby Yaz and I come from "the land of chocolate" in Chiapas, located in the farthest corner of Mexico. I am a Historian and a Tour Guide. I worked as a teacher for a few years at different levels both in rural and urban settings. I love academia but I also love the outdoors, and I realized that becoming a Tour Guide I could combine traveling and sharing my knowledge about History and Archaeology, as well as connect to nature and with people from all over the world. Chiapas has a remarkably interesting history linked to its location and natural resources. I will be glad to show this land, which I love, so you can have a better understanding and enjoyment of local culture and traditions. I will also be glad to take you to authentic destinations where you can appreciate all the beauty that this land has to offer: amazing natural wonders, parks, protected areas and natural reserves, colonial cities and buildings, local museums and cuisine. When possible, I will take you to little-known indigenous communities, local cooperatives, gastronomic and artisan workshops to contribute to local economy and tourist culture and promote a tourism that benefits all. Of course, these tourist destinations, will be adapted to today's needs and in tune with the necessary security measures for both you and host communities. For me, Chiapas is one of those places that stimulates our senses naturally. It has the scent of raindrops on dry earth, of pine needles getting dry on the ground, of copal incense and candles. Everywhere you look you will find something that catches your eye: a colourful building, a beautiful piece of traditional fabric, a curious handicraft, or a multi-coloured dish. This is the place where the breath of wind that exhales from caves, the waterfalls' endless energy, and the strong wingbeat of hummingbirds and thousands of other tropical birds will make you feel alive. It would be my genuine pleasure help you having unique experiences and get the best out of your stay in Mexico. - BA degree in History. I invite you to discover Magdalena Aldama through an experience that goes far beyond tourism. Over time, I have built a genuine relationship of friendship and trust with my local hosts, allowing me to share their community in a respectful and personal way. Together, we’ll meet these master artisans, discover the extraordinary traditions behind the backstrap loom, handmade jewelry, and “Nuti” ixtle bags, and learn about the stories and skills passed down through generations. Most importantly, we’ll sit down for a home-cooked meal, share conversations, stories, and everyday moments with our hosts. This is not a staged cultural visit, but an authentic encounter made possible by the bonds I have built with the people of Magdalena Aldama.
- We will travel to Magdalena Aldama, a Tzotzil Maya community located 21 km from San Cristóbal de Las Casas, about one hour away. - We begin at the local church, home to the community’s patron saint, whose beautifully brocaded huipil showcases the extraordinary complexity of Aldama’s textile tradition. - We then visit the humble home of a family of master artisans for an intimate demonstration of their craft, including a traditional backstrap loom (telar de cintura) demonstration. - We will also discover other two distinctive traditions: handmade beaded jewelry, and the exquisite “Nuti” bags, woven from ixtle fiber extracted from maguey leaves. - We continue to another local family’s kitchen, where we will be welcomed with a lovingly prepared home-cooked meal. Over lunch, we will share stories, conversations, and everyday moments with our hosts, offering a genuine opportunity to connect with locals. - We return to San Cristóbal de Las Casas in the afternoon.
