Altun Ha Ancient Maya City Adventure in Half day

This tour takes you approximately 30 miles out of the city, passing through several rural communities, into the jungle, where some indigenous Maya built a structure around 200BC. This later grew into a small, but very rich and important commercial and cerimonial city, which flourished until 900AD, during the great Maya Collapse. During excavation the carved Jade Head of the Maya Sun God "Kinich Ahau", the largest Jade object ever found throughout the entire Maya World, was found at ALTUN HA.

In addition you also get, in chronological order, the History and Culture of Belize, with special emphasis on the Maya, especially the ones that occupied This city.

The passion that I have for my country and it's diverse cultures, along with the fact that my mother in law is full blood Yucatec Maya, who are direct descendants of the Mayans who occupied this site, is one of the reasons I love this experience and I enjoy imparting my knowledge and experience to my guests, the way I do to my children and grandchildren.

"Altun Ha" Maya Ruins Adventure in Belize

Take a ride with me, and experience 3000 years of history in the Lost word of the Maya. Learn where they came from, there ideology and what brought them to their great demise.

The name "Altun Ha", literally "rockstone water", is a rough translation of the name of a nearby village, Rockstone Pond, into Yucatec Maya. The site includes at least 500 visible structures or mounds. At its peak, the population of Altun Ha and the surrounding vicinity ranged between 8, 000-10, 000 inhabitants, with around 3, 000 individuals living in the central core of the city.

The tour takes you through Belize City, which dates back to the early 1600s, when the British first settled here and is the former capital of the country, once known as British Honduras.

The Fort George Memorial Park that was built in honor of the men from British Honduras who volunteered to go fight in the World Wars for Britain, BTL park locally called Lindbergh Landing, as this park was built on the spot where Charles Lindbergh landed the Spirit Of St. Louis in 1927. Will visit the St. John's Anglican Cathedral which dates back to the early 1800s, the magistrate court (formerly the National Assembly ), the supreme court buildings, our famous swing bridge which was erected in the 1920s and is the only one in the region, the Baptist Church where the bells tolled in 1638 to inform the African slaves that they were finally free, are some of the interesting places you will see.

You learn about the main ethnic groups that make up our population, like the Creole, Maya, Mestizo, East Indian and Garinagu.

Xunantunich - Maiden of the Rock/Stone Lady
Located at the extreme western border of Belize in the Cayo District, in the village of Succotz, where you cross on a ferry over the beautiful Macal River an its amazing rapids, and a short drive towards the majestic and spiritual ruins of the lost maya world.
The site was a major ceremonial enter during the Classic period, and is composed of 6 major plazas; a ball court and 3 carved stelaes. The most prominent structure is the pyramid "El Castillo" (the castle), which rises 130 feet above the plaza, This city is host to the highest man made structure built in Belize, preserved by Mother Nature for over 1400 years
When other great cities began to collapse such as Tikal, Caracol and Naranjo this city strived.

Some aspects of this tour that my guests are ussually excited about are the experience of crossing the river on the hand cranked ferry, climbing the tallest structure there and looking across into Guatemala and the story behind the name "XUNANTUNICH".

Here you can find the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America, St. John's Cathedral, built from bricks used as ballast in sailing ships.
