I am a proud Belizean and a professional tour guide. I have been guiding now for 15 years and I love what I do. The Classic Period of Maya civilization, Altun Ha is located 30 miles north of Belize City and about six miles from the Caribbean Sea. The true ancient name is unknown and "Altun Ha" is a Mayan translation of the nearby village named "Rockstone Pond. " Altun Ha is small compared to other ruins in the region, the extent to which the site has been cleared and restored makes it easy to imagine its past as a major ceremonial center. Plaza A is a large grassy area, surrounded on all sides by pyramids and is adjoined by Plaza B which contains the largest structure on the site, the Temple of the Masonry Altars, which rises 54 ft. above the plaza. A hike to the top of the Temple of the Masonry Altars is rewarded with a magnificent panorama of the site and over the treetops of the jungle. This temple went through eight phases of construction and the round altar at the top is unique to this site. It was the focus of an unusual sacrificial ceremony in which copal (incense) and beautiful jade
Dorian easily adjusted to confusion on my part about ship's time versus local time. Our ship did not make the time change for Belize. So, I thought I should be at the pier an hour later (this is a tender port for cruise ships). Dorian said that his tour operated on ship's time. None the less, the three of us (me, my wife and our daughter) were treated to an excellent visit to Altun Ha plus local wine tasting and a brief tour of Belize City.

Dorian was great. We are already planning our trip back with our family next March and will definitely use him. His knowledge was so vast and made our trip to the ruins much more enjoyable. He helped us get fantastic photos for memories and catered to our wants. We stopped for lunch at a fabulous restaurant and felt safe the entire trip. This was the best spur of the moment part of our vacation.
Fantastic tour. Dorian was waiting right where he said he was, and was able to get us to Altun Ha before any of the ship tours. We had the site to ourselves for about 20 minutes which was great for pictures. He gave an excellent overview of the history of the area (but not so much it was overwhelming). Plus a nice stop for cashew wine and quick tour of the city before getting back on the ship. I would definitely recommend Dorian and this tour for any visitors to Belize City.
Dorian is an excellent guide and was a good source of historical information. He was attentive to our mobility limitations and our interests. The visit to the Altun Ha Site was inherently worth while but the hours of driving involved in the visit diminished this worth considerably.
