Ghent has over 400 protected monuments, more than 50 churches, and several UNESCO world heritage sites. Lonely Planet has described it as Europe's hidden gem. This vibrant and picturesque city is a must-see when you come to Belgium! Allow me to take you on a private tour through the historical centre of Ghent. Together, we will travel through time, first addressing the founding of the city back in the Dark Ages. I will tell you about the dark ages and how the city was besieged by Vikings, but also how it thrived and prospered, to become the second largest city in Northern Europe in the Golden Age of Ghent. Being a born and raised Ghentian, I'm also able to give you some information about modern day life in this beautiful city. Ghent is a lively and rather young city, thanks to the many students that live here. I can also give you some tips on where to go for dinner, what local dishes you should try, and even where to go beer tasting if you fancy. I hope to meet you very soon!
- We'll start our tour at the place where the two rivers of Ghent collide, a beautiful spot called Portus Ganda. - Afterwards, we'll walk by the castle of Gerald the Devil. Many gruesome legends have been told about Gerald, the first owner of the castle. - Next, we'll go into the Cathedral, home to the famous Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers, the most stolen painting in the history of mankind. - Later, we'll pass by the Belfry tower, symbol of the power of Ghent. - We'll then go onto the Saint-Michaels Bridge to have the best view on the three towers of Ghent. - After that, we'll stroll through the medieval grain port: Graslei and Korenlei. - Next, we'll proceed to discover the picturesque and medieval neighborhoods of Patershol and Oudburg. - Later, we'll take a look at the Industrial heritage of Ghent and I'll tell you the story of our local James Bond. - At last, we'll go to the Gravensteen, castle of the Counts of Flanders.

The historical center is quite compact and entirely carfree, so walking is the best way to get around.
