Hi there! Welcome to Ghent - the hidden gem of Europe! My name is Arn. I am 33 years old and have been living in the city of Ghent all my life. I have a Master's Degree in political sciences and international relations, and have worked in several different sectors: public policy, IT, and mobility consultancy. A few years ago I discovered my true passion: telling stories. Since then, I've been working as a tour guide in Ghent. In my tours, I try to mix things up a little. Some history, random fun facts, cool legends, and unexpected stories about the city and its citizens. I can also tailor my tours to what you find the most interesting! Overview of your Ghent tour

Ghent is an amazing city. A picturesque old town, a vibrant student city, a city of classic and modern art, graffiti, festivals, and urban culture. Let me show you all sides of this beautiful town! Belgium's biggest student city is a historical gem with stunning architecture around every corner — but also a lively, thriving and constantly reinventing itself kind of place. And yes — my hometown. I was born and raised here, which means I won't just walk you past the famous sights and recite dates at you. I'll tell you the stories the guidebooks skip. This tour is for everyone. History buffs? Ghent has layers going back 1.500 years and I love diving into all of it. Just here for a good time and great photos? I'll show you the most beautiful parts of the city and take you to my favorite chocolate shops. Want something different? Let me know what you're interested in. All my tours can be customized on request! Ready to enjoy Ghent together?

We've had great experiences using Tours By Locals on previous vacations and this time did not disappoint either. We had a fun time visiting Ghent with Arn. He was friendly, easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and had great enthusiasm. He was quick to respond to communications we sent ahead of our visit. We learned so many interesting facts while touring the city and even stopped at Arn's favorite chocolate shop... which we returned to later. He gave us a great introduction to the altarpiece that we had tickets to see later in the day. We highly recommend both Arn as a tour guide and the Tours By Locals company. Thank you Arn for a lovely day in Ghent!

Even in the pouring rain we had a great tour with amazing food and interesting stories attached to the dining experience. Loved it and recommend it highly. Arn was knowledgeable and we enjoyed his company and city highlights!

We met  Arne for the Highlights of Ghent tour after a weary flight/train.  Our fatigue vanished immediately!  His enthusiasm for his native city was contagious.  He immediately engaged our weary minds with the history of his hometown.  Arn loves history and it shows— he is a great storyteller and that is what it takes to make history come alive and see it from the perspective of the many ages. Arn proved himself extremely knowledgeable about his city and so willing to share his enthusiasm for his hometown. He made the city come alive and the two hours flew by quickly -- and ended with a taste of his favorite elderberry liqueur, hometown brewed.  I do hope you will engage Arne to learn more about Ghent.  You will not be disappointed! 900 words do not allow an adequate review of his tour. He loves his city and it shows. Enjoy it with him! Karen and Jim Hibey

Your Ghent tour itinerary

This is an overview of my default itinerary. This can be fully customized! -We'll start our tour in the middle of the medieval city center of Ghent, with a beautiful view on our skyline: the 3 towers of Ghent. -We'll then walk to the old port of Ghent: Graslei and Korenlei. -Next, we'll come across the highlight of Ghent: Gravensteen, the castle of the counts of Flanders. A unique stone castle right in the middle of the city. -We'll then stroll by some nice, authentic places that offer Flemish stew plus local sweets & specialties. Good places to try one of our many local beers too! -Later, we'll walk through one of the most colorful places of Ghent: the little Graffiti street. -Afterwards, we take a closer look at my favorite of the 3 towers: The Belfry, symbol of power of the medieval city. -At last, we'll go into the Cathedral, where I'll tell you the amazing story of the most stolen painting in the history of mankind: The Ghent Altarpiece. - And of course many more things on the route!
