Usually Bruges gets all the fame, but Ghent has an astonishing heritage with some of the oldest buildings in Belgium. Did you know that Ghent was in the 13-14th century the second biggest city in the north of Europe (only behind Paris)? Or that some historians call it the Manhattan of the Middle Ages because of its impressive towers? During my walking tour you will feel this amazing past. The stone palaces (some of them from the 12th century), the impressive Belfry, the stunning cathedral, the romantic Patershol's alleys, the canals and the medieval port… I'm happy to live in Ghent and to show "my city" to people all over the world. But this tour is not only about the past. Today around 80.000 students (from the University of Ghent and the technical schools) live in in the city providing Ghent with so much vibrancy. Besides, UNESCO has designated Ghent as "Creative City of Music".
We visit the medieval centre of Ghent with: *His astonishing Belfry (listed as a World Heritage Sites by UNESCO). *We feel the spirituality of Saint Nicholas' Church (13th century), *We walk then through the Graslei and Korenlei piers, *The Great Butchers' Hall, *The Vrijdagmarkt square (linked with the Hundred Years' War between England and France), *De Patershol's cobbled alleys to discover the stunning Gravensteen (a castle from the 12th century). *We visit the interior of Saint Bavo's Cathedral (during opening hours, free entrance), a gothic gem church with baroque decoration. Optional we can visit there the "Mystic Lamb", one of the most famous works by the Flemish Primitives (during opening hours, €12,5 per person).
