I am passionate about our beautiful, quirky, historic city and its famous river. I'm a Native Texan and a downtowner for 40 years - come with me to discover surprising secrets, scandalous stories, hidden art, vibrant murals, and handsome architectural details that will enrich your visit to San Antonio. The urban environment rewards those with a keen eye who are curious and appreciate what many never see, tend to overlook, or know very little about - this is the San Antonio you will experience on my satisfyingly real tours. One of my greatest pleasures is sharing San Antonio and enabling others to experience its charming peculiarities from a local perspective. Everyone on my tour receives a list of my recommended places to eat - all locally owned and all places where the real people go. Also, I can adapt and create tours for larger groups via bus or van, if desired. Please join me - I look forward to meeting you. This comfortable walking tour will highlight three adjacent cemeteries - all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The peaceful setting among mature live oaks offer an opportunity to linger as we respectfully recall the lives of the individuals at rest - some famous, some infamous, and others less remembered. Included will be: Clara Driscoll, Savior of the Alamo, Sam Maverick, Signer of Texas Declaration of Independence, David Barkley, WWI Medal of Honor recipient, Julian Onderdonk, Painter of Texas landscapes, Alfred Giles, Prominent Architect, Buffalo Soldiers, and many others. Our walk will enable a better understanding of cemetery history, architecture, and the use of symbols expressed in carved stone. Excellent photo opportunities throughout.
We will begin at the entrance to San Antonio National Cemetery, 517 Paso Hondo Street. Then we will visit City Cemetery #1 (the oldest and largest we will see) and Alamo Masonic Cemetery, before returning to our starting point. We will walk across multiple surfaces, including some unpaved, uneven surfaces.
