Welcome to Newport! I am a local historian and 10th-generation Rhode Islander eager to show you this beautiful state. Whether you're here to uncover the city's rich history or bask on our sunny beaches, I'm eager to show you Newport's iconic landmarks and hidden gems of the city. Our unique and immersive tours will go beyond the guidebooks with little-known histories, insider recommendations, and a personal understanding of how Rhode Island's history has shaped its present. As a PhD student in architectural history, I bring academic passion to the city along with my personal experience. Together, we'll create unforgettable memories as we delve into the vibrant culture and history of the region. We'll enjoy Newport's quieter side with this selection of off-the-beaten-path destinations across the city. We'll work our way from the region's precolonial history through the Revolutionary War, the Gilded Age, and up to today. This tour will provide repeat visitors with a fresh look at the city and will present first-time visitors with a selection of the city's best hidden gems. Starting at Miantonomi Park and driving to Prescott Farm, we'll explore Newport's seventeenth-century history and growth from a minor settlement to a major colonial economic hub. We'll follow the path of Newport's working class from the Point Neighborhood to the Fifth Ward, a historically Irish neighborhood. From there, a trip out Ocean Drive will show off Newport's wild coastal beauty before we head up Bellevue Avenue to appreciate some lesser-known Gilded Age mansions. Ending at Island Cemetery, we'll appreciate how history and landscape come together at the resting sites of many of Newport's notable residents.
- We will meet at Perrotti Park or another a predetermined location. - Our tour will officially begin at Miantonomi Park, where we'll discuss Newport's precolonial indigenous history. - At Prescott Farm, in the Point neighborhood, and at the Colony House, Newport's colonial era comes alive in its rural and urban architecture. - Down Thames Street and out Ocean Drive, we'll compare Newport's working-class neighborhoods with its wild Atlantic Coast, stopping by the Castle Hill lighthouse for views of Narragansett Bay. - After working our way up famous Bellevue Avenue, we'll end our tour at Island Cemetery, where Newport's many historical eras come together in the memorials and monuments of the city's notable residents. * Itinerary can be customized to suit your needs.
