Born in 1952, I am a retired teacher of earth science and digital graphics. As of 2019 I have been a resident of Haines for twelve years. I have been a naturalist all of my life, and have enjoyed being a tour guide for over a decade. My passions include photography and local history. Photography encourages me to explore and absorb the environment, see the world from an artistic perspective, and strive to do justice to God's handiwork in the world. Local history helps to put the cultural landscape into a larger relevant context. In my retirement I have chosen to be a local guide for the joy of sharing the beauty and bounty of my neighborhood with visitors and guests. I also enjoy watching people smile, and hopefully making them laugh. Retired teacher, photographer and author with a Masters degree in Education. Local photography tour guide and naturalist for over ten years. Superintendent of Judges in the Photography division of the Southeast Alaska State Fair. Licensed and insured. None

Haines offers unparalleled opportunities to capture images of sweeping beauty, wildlife, and culture that will preserve memories that last a lifetime and rival the travel photos that brought you here in the first place. In the course of the Haines private tour for photographers I strive to cover the basics of your camera's technical functions. I offer instruction how and when to use the camera's various modes to optimize the photograph you would like to save as a real keeper. This would include: (1) choosing the proper ISO; (2) when to use aperture mode vs. shutter priority or other modes. I also will discuss the proper application of bracketing to optimize dynamic range within a shot with high contrast. Additionally I offer tips to optimize your opportunities for successful wildlife photography. Modern cameras make technical considerations easy. Composition is KING! If you just want to go out and shoot pretty scenes I will get you to the best spots and then I discuss the best composition consideration.
We will see and capture: - Totemic art, poles, and panels I offer a historical perspective on the interaction between the local Tlingit and Anglo people who were invited to settle here and create our town. I will give tips on how to get truly unique totem photos. - Fort Wm. H. Seward I offer a historical perspective on why and how Alaska's first permanent army post came to be established in Haines, as well as its evolution after its decommission. The Fort remains a vibrant center of the Haines borough. - Alaska's commercial maritime heritage: Haines' oldest continually operating business is a historic cannery located on a scenic cove near town. This is a truly iconic location. We will explore the many compositional opportunities that present themselves here. - The Alaskan landscape: Sweeping vistas, glaciers, wildflowers, salmon rivers, in addition to wildlife as wildlife permits. The four-hour option can include either Chilkoot or Chilkat State Parks, according to your preference at the time of the tour
