Born in 1952, I am a retired teacher of earth science and digital graphics. As of 2019 I have been a resident of Haines for twelve years. I have been a naturalist all of my life, and have enjoyed being a tour guide for over a decade. My passions include photography and local history. Photography encourages me to explore and absorb the environment, see the world from an artistic perspective, and strive to do justice to God's handiwork in the world. Local history helps to put the cultural landscape into a larger relevant context. In my retirement I have chosen to be a local guide for the joy of sharing the beauty and bounty of my neighborhood with visitors and guests. I also enjoy watching people smile, and hopefully making them laugh. Retired teacher, photographer and author with a Masters degree in Education. Local photography tour guide and naturalist for over ten years. Superintendent of Judges in the Photography division of the Southeast Alaska State Fair. Licensed and insured. None

The Extended Photo Tour is designed for the discerning guest who wishes to take the time to fully explore their camera's potential and the full range of photo opportunities along the Chilkat Peninsula both north and south of Haines. In the course of the Haines private tour for photographers I cover the basics of your camera's technical functions: how and when to use the camera's various modes to optimize the photograph you would like to save as a real keeper. This would include: (1) choosing the proper ISO; (2) when to use aperture mode vs. shutter priority or other modes. I will offer tips to optimize your opportunities for successful wildlife photography. If you are familiar with your equipment, I will get you to the best locations and facilitate your enjoyment. If you just want to go out and shoot pretty scenes, I discuss composition tips when framing your shots so you come home with an award-winning photograph. "Snapshot" does not need to be in your vocabulary on a Haines photography tour.
Fort Wm. H. Seward: Alaska's first permanent army post offers unique photo opportunities of totems and native art panels. Chilkat River: Visit the banks of one of our nation's pristine salmon rivers. This is a sweeping landscape that allows us to explore endless opportunities and methods for landscape photography. Letnikof Cove: An iconic setting of Alaska's historic commercial maritime heritage. Chilkat State Park: offers vistas of glaciers, waterfalls, and wildflowers. Picture Point: The iconic view of Haines and Fort Seward set before the expanse of the Chilkat Range. Chilkoot State Park: At the head of the Lynn Canal and Lutak Inlet, this river and lake offer tremendous wildlife opportunities in late summer, as well as tranquil wilderness throughout the year. Along the way, I am happy to share the back-stories of each location. This includes both cultural and natural history. Visit the photo section to see examples of the locations we will visit.
