Virginia wine has exploded onto the scene in the last decade or two, but not everyone knows that the great Thomas Jefferson tried to make wine . . . and failed. As a native of Charlottesville, I have been steeped in Jefferson since childhood, and as a student at his University of Virginia, I worked as a server. I can remember going to (what I thought was) the first vineyard to plant vines in Virginia when I was working on the historic Downtown Mall at the Old Hardware Store restaurant. Since then we have blossomed to over 200 vineyards within an hour of the city center. How is it so easy now when it was so hard for Ole TJ? We'll find out by visiting the vineyard where vines were planted on our bicentennial (1976), the vineyard where the Italian winemaker Jefferson had imported failed while a modern Italian would have great success, and finally the vineyard where a guiding force at both of those vineyard would retire to do it his way.
- We will visit Barboursville, Jefferson and Rausse Vineyards. - About 1. 5 hours of driving with >1 hour at each vineyard, so about 4 hours. - At each Vineyard we will enjoy a seasonal flight or tasting of wine and the lovely views of the vineyard. - Barboursville has two options: a self guided tasting from automated dispensers guarantee sanitation; or a seated flight (with or without culinary pairing) for an additional charge - Jefferson has two flight choices of 4 wines each which change frequently to keep you coming back! - Rausse also had sanitation in mind when he had his flights bottled in adorable little 2 oz bottles. They have three flight options, also of 4 wines each - stainless steel aged whites and reds (2 of each), an Oak-aged whites, and reds. - I will include a light picnic of baguette from a noted local ABC bakery with award-winning goat cheese from local Caramont Farms as well as other seasonal local offerings of charcuterie and honeys.

Minivan for 6 people is the main transportation method for this tour (as romantic as it might be in the Italian countryside, no one would have fun squeezed into my Fiat 500).
