MAURA B. Foligno, Umbria, Italy "Wherever you go, go with all your heart". (Confucius) I was born and raised in Umbria and, in my twenties, like so many young people, I packed my bag and traveled the world. I spent time in Paris, Istanbul, Madrid - in fact all the major European capitals and also spent several months travelling throughout the USA. On my return I began teaching Italian at the Università degli Stranieri di Perugia, then quickly realized that I wanted to share not just my language but also my passion for my heritage that is the natural beauty and the art of my land. I studied Art History and gained my Umbria Tour Guide's License 24 years ago and have never looked back. Umbria is a land of treasures! It is home to some of the most incredible pieces of artwork in the world. At the end of a working day I always feel a sense of gratitude and pride for the unforgettable experiences which I have been able to share with my guests… These might include a day of walking the cobbled streets of magnificent hamlets such as Spello or the feeling of being almost overwhelmed by the famous and revolutionary frescoes painted by Giotto in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi; we might have finished the day by savoring a glass of Sagrantino together while admiring the breathtaking view of the gentle countryside. The choice of authentic cultural experiences which we can share is almost limitless. I look forward to giving you a unique gift from my Umbria. It's a gift which cannot be lost and I hope will continue to give you the sense of an invisible link back here to my home forever. Perugia's history dates back to its ancient Etruscan foundations. This vibrant and beautiful town is home to the University of Perugia, one of Europe's oldest universities and to Umbria Jazz Festival, the most important Italian festival. The Eurochocolate Festival makes Perugia the go-to place for anybody who loves chocolate. We will focus on the stunning Fontana Maggiore, one of the most charming Medieval fountains in Europe and you will learn why it has become the iconic symbol of the town. Raphale's master, Perugino, had his workshop here and was considered by his contemporaries: "the best master in Italy". He played a leading role in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel before Michelangelo. We will unlock the secrets of the mysterious, underground Perugia, an incredible Medieval city beneath the city, a spooky, well-preserved labyrinth of arches, alleys and houses. Perugia was picked by David Lansing, National Geographic Traveler, when he was issued the challenge to find the "World's Sexiest Small City "
-We will walk down to the impressive Paolina Fortress and then up to Piazza Carducci where you will enjoy the sweeping view down the valley. -From Piazza Italia we will take a nice walk along Corso Vannucci and take a pause to admire the incredible architecture of the Medieval Palazzo dei Priori, the seat of the public power. - If you like, (optional) we will visit Perugino's astonishing frescoes in the Medieval bank, the Nobile Collegio del Cambio. -There you will be amazed by the incredible XIII century Fontana Maggiore and the elegant Cathedral of St. Lorenzo. -An easy walk, 5 minutes, will let us reach the highest point of the town: Porta Sole, whose breathtaking panorama alone is worth the climb. But you will really learn about the true Medieval spirit when discovering Via Maesta' delle Volte. . . which will be my special treat! NOTE: All suggested itineraries can be combined with another to make a full day and can be customized to meet your unique needs and your interests
