MAURA B. Foligno, Umbria, Italy "Wherever you go, go with all your heart". (Confucius) I was born and raised in Umbria and, in my twenties, like so many young people, I packed my bag and traveled the world. I spent time in Paris, Istanbul, Madrid - in fact all the major European capitals and also spent several months travelling throughout the USA. On my return I began teaching Italian at the Università degli Stranieri di Perugia, then quickly realized that I wanted to share not just my language but also my passion for my heritage that is the natural beauty and the art of my land. I studied Art History and gained my Umbria Tour Guide's License 24 years ago and have never looked back. Umbria is a land of treasures! It is home to some of the most incredible pieces of artwork in the world. At the end of a working day I always feel a sense of gratitude and pride for the unforgettable experiences which I have been able to share with my guests… These might include a day of walking the cobbled streets of magnificent hamlets such as Spello or the feeling of being almost overwhelmed by the famous and revolutionary frescoes painted by Giotto in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi; we might have finished the day by savoring a glass of Sagrantino together while admiring the breathtaking view of the gentle countryside. The choice of authentic cultural experiences which we can share is almost limitless. I look forward to giving you a unique gift from my Umbria. It's a gift which cannot be lost and I hope will continue to give you the sense of an invisible link back here to my home forever. One of the first things which strikes visitors to Gubbio is the homogenous nature of its look. Unlike almost any other town in Italy it seems to have been designed and built in one Medieval style which makes for a unique visit. Throughout this delightful little town, you can breathe a silent Medieval spirit and walk along the little stairways and alleys alongside warehouses with their narrow-arched doorways, which are known as the "doors of the Deadman". Don't be completely deceived by the sense of quietness. If you are fortunate enough to be here on the day of the Medieval 'Candle Race' you will understand why the local people have the reputation in Umbria of being quite simply, completely mad! The most magnificent work of art in the town is the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli, one of Italy's chief examples of Medieval civic architecture. After enjoying the gorgeous panorama and the sweeping view, we will reach the 16th century Fontana dei Matti where you can earn an official 'license of madness'!
-We will meet at Piazza 40 Martiri where the Loggia dei Tiratori overlooks St. Francis' Church. -After exploring the interior of the church we will take a walk along Via Baldassini and we will reach the Fontana dei Matti that awaits us for the special ritual that takes place there. -The elevator will deliver us in the striking Piazza della Signoria where the noteworthy Palazzo dei Consoli will amaze us with its extraordinary beauty, (Museum optional). -Do not miss the fun of getting lost in the winding lanes and taking a break to admire the little stone bridges and Medieval towers in the small district of St. Martino!
