Lucca by Bike & Gelato: The Sweet Ride

This tour starts on the city walls, where a flat 4km loop above the red rooftops and all completely tree lined. Then we come down into the streets — weaving through the centre, past Roman ruins and fully ornated medieval churches — before we stop at my Lucca's favorite gelato maker for a proper tasting. Cycling in Lucca is less a sport and more a way of life. The whole city centre is traffic-free, the terrain is flat, and the bike is the local's way of moving from neighbourhood to neighbourhood. On this tour you'll do it properly: with a guide, with a plan, and with gelato at the end. Bikes are rented from local shops near our meeting point — no special equipment needed. Perfect for: couples, families with older children (10+), active travellers, anyone who wants to see the city from a different perspective.

1) The Walls — We begin with a full loop of the Renaissance ramparts: 4km of tree-lined promenade, with views across the rooftops to the mountains. The best way to get oriented in Lucca. 2) Down into the city — From the walls we drop into the roman street plan: Piazza San Michele, the amphitheatre square — all seen from the saddle. 3) Some Hidden corners — A bike lets you cover more ground in less time. 4) Gelato tasting — We finish at a gelateria for a demo and tasting: of seasonal flavours made daily.
