Between 1887-96 Jewish immigrants from Europe from the First Aliya settled north of Jaffa building the Neve Tzedek neighborhood. In 1906, Akiva Arye Weiss organized a group of 66 Jewish families from the Second Aliya and residents of Jaffa to get together to plan another neighborhood Ahuzat Bayit (“Homestead”) which was shortly renamed Tel Aviv. Walking along leafy Rothschild Blvd, one of Tel Aviv's first streets lets you experience some of its history. At the corner of Herzl St you can savor an espresso at Tel Aviv’s first ‘kiosk’. In 1919 Yehuda Magidovich arrived in Israel and became one of Israel’s most prolific architects building 500 buildings mostly in the eclectic style. After 1930s Jewish architects who had studied the architectural ideas of the Bauhaus school fled the rise of Nazism in Germany and converged on Tel Aviv. The result is that Tel Aviv has the largest concentration of International style buildings, recognized by UNESCO in 2003 when the “White City” was declared a World Heritage Site.
We'll meet at the Clock Tower and wander the alleyways of Old Jaffa going back to the time of the prophet Jonah to understand its history. We’ll check out an incredible sculpture called Orange Suspendu that connects to Jaffa’s history. We’ll visit the Tachana (Train “Station”) complex from 1892 and the new Park HaMesila (Railway Parkway). We'll walk along leafy Rothschild Blvd with its mix of old buildings and modern highrises. We'll walk along Tel Aviv's promenade which runs along Israel's coast.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
