The west is one of the most scenic parts of the island and takes in breath-taking views of the coastline to the south and on a clear day you can see the Mountains of Mourne in Ireland. We leave Douglas and travel on the back roads to the west stopping at the Braaid the site of an Iron Age roundhouse and two Norse long houses on this site which represent its occupation until the 11th or 12th century AD. Travelling through the old mining town of Foxdale, we head west to the coast and take in the views of the coastline from Niarbyl (the bay of the tail of the rocks). This area of the coastline is quite magnificent, with Niarbyl holding many geological secrets. Leaving Niarbyl we head towards Peel for a light lunch and visits the Castle which was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot, 11th century Viking King of Mann, and eventually fortified castle of the Lords of Mann.
