Hi, my name is Claude, I was born and raised in Flanders Fields. The Great War became a passion when in 1981, Nelly and I purchased a bar and restaurant just opposite Ploegsteert Memorial to Missing. We still meet people coming from all over the world at our place. I started doing research with Ted Smith and Tony Spagnoly in the eighties, and then with many other authors and historians. I am now a specialized battlefield guide in the plains of Flanders in Belgium and the Somme area in France. Below you will find my standard tours but I can also build a custom tour, you provide the information and I'll do the rest. I like to talk about history of course but also about all what makes our daily life in France and Belgium. I am flexible, provide a high standard service, can bring a walker or a wheelchair to make your tour more comfortable. I am using digital maps and old pictures of the places you will visit. During that day I will make you understanding why these battles were fought, we will talk about the soldier's daily life in the trenches but also behind the lines. You will stand near major Australian Memorials in Villers-Bretonneux, visit the SJMC and the the Memorial to the Missing. You will stand at the Windmill in Pozières, all these well known places in Australia. I am guiding on the battlefields for more than 10 years, so I have the knowledge and provide a personalized service.
We are leaving your accommodation in Ypres or Lille at 08h30 we are driving towards Villers Bretonneux, see the Victoria School, the Villers Bretonneux Cemetery and memorial where the dawn ceremony happens on the 25th April and visit the Sir John Monash Interpretative Centre Stand at Le Hamel Australian Memorial, talking about the Battle of the Hamel. we are passing near Albert and the basilica with the Golden Madonna. Lunch The Lochnagar crater at Pozières and the 1st Australian Division Memorial. Stand at the Windmill and the Mouquet Farm Memorial.
