But behind these walls lives a story the world must never forget. During World War II, Terezín became a Jewish ghetto and transit camp. Thousands arrived here with uncertainty in their eyes. Many would never return home. Between 1941 and 1945, approximately 140,000 Jewish men, women, and children were sent here from across Europe. Terezín was presented to the outside world as a ‘model Jewish settlement.’ It was used for propaganda. But the reality was overcrowding, hunger, disease, and fear. Today, we are not here as tourists. Vavara was one of the best tour guides my wife and I have had! She is very knowledgeable, personable and was sensitive to our interests. She provided insightful background as we walked through Terezin and gave us time to reflect on what we were seeing. Her driver was also terrific…picking us up at our hotel, the Andaz Hotel in Prague, and gettng as back and forth. His car was very comforable and he was a safe driver.
