Very pleased to meet you. I’m a retired college professor; used to talking, and having an audience. Canadian born and bred, I’ve lived in five Canadian provinces and countries around the world: the USA, China, the Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Korea. In Korea, I ran the “Seoul Mystery Tours.” If you missed them, my apologies. They got me a fair bit of notoriety, interviews, marriage proposals, and writeups in various publications. I also wrote “The Rough Guide to Seoul.” So guiding was always in my blood. Having lived in so many countries, and not needing to be anywhere in particular, I chose in retirement to settle here in Saint John, deciding it is simply the finest place in the world. Everything is here, and near: history, culture, nature, landscapes, wildlife right up close, perfectly-preserved buildings from back in the day when architecture was fine art, and a local population that loves talking to strangers and sharing stories. And there are a lot of stories. Among other incidents of my misspent youth, I am also an experienced journalist, a published writer, and author of a book on Canadian history. I’ve been guiding in and around Saint John for three years, at this writing. I have made many new friends, which is a big reason I love the work. I hope soon you will be one. And I hope I will leave you with memories you will never forget.

Join me on a shore excursion to an heirloom of the Belle Epoque, the postcard-perfect town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, Canada’s first summer resort, where magnates and celebrities once flocked to escape the heat, hayfever, and hustle of urban life. It is my favourite summer getaway from Saint John. I did not grow up here, but it reminds me of the town in which I did grow up, in the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River. Irving Berlin once had a summer home in both places. St. Andrews always feels to me like stepping back in time; or into a novel. Perhaps The Great Gatsby.
• Reversing Falls, on the way there and on the way back, to see the waterfall flow in both directions. • The great north woods, Longfellow’s “forest primeval.” • The Algonquin Resort, a grand old railway hotel still in operation. • The tourist town of St. Andrews • Shopping on its quaint and lively main street. • The Bay of Fundy, up close • The blockhouse, preserved from the War of 1812. • The memorial to the Irish immigrants of 1847.
