Very pleased to meet you. I’m a retired college professor; used to talking, and having an audience. Canadian born and bred, I’ve lived in five Canadian provinces and countries around the world: the USA, China, the Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Korea. In Korea, I ran the “Seoul Mystery Tours.” If you missed them, my apologies. They got me a fair bit of notoriety, interviews, marriage proposals, and writeups in various publications. I also wrote “The Rough Guide to Seoul.” So guiding was always in my blood. Having lived in so many countries, and not needing to be anywhere in particular, I chose in retirement to settle here in Saint John, deciding it is simply the finest place in the world. Everything is here, and near: history, culture, nature, landscapes, wildlife right up close, perfectly-preserved buildings from back in the day when architecture was fine art, and a local population that loves talking to strangers and sharing stories. And there are a lot of stories. Among other incidents of my misspent youth, I am also an experienced journalist, a published writer, and author of a book on Canadian history. I’ve been guiding in and around Saint John for three years, at this writing. I have made many new friends, which is a big reason I love the work. I hope soon you will be one. And I hope I will leave you with memories you will never forget.

I did not grow up in Saint John. Having lived in many places around the world, I chose it as the best. I’d love to show you why. This is an overview tour, which takes us to several high points from which we can see Saint John spread out below, as the angels see it, while I tell you some of the legends and historical tales I have collected. I am not an amateur historian—I am a published writer, with a book on Canadian history and a number of articles to my credit. Let me share with you the story of my city.
Meeting at the agreed point Reversing Falls, Saint John’s celebrated geographical anomaly, a waterfall that flows both ways. Wolastoq Park, a high point from which we can see the river, Saint John’s lifeblood—and site of the former lunatic asylum. Carleton Martello Tower—season and renovations permitting. A distinctive Napoleonic defense built for the War of 1812. Fort Howe—built during the American Revolution to secure the site for the British. An ideal view of the city and the harbour spread below. King’s Square—the traditional city centre, where all roads meet in a Union Jack. Saint John City Market—the city’s beating heart, and the oldest public market in Canada. Trinity Heritage District—a perfectly preserved Victorian cityscape, featuring, among other things, Benedict Arnold’s house.
