1942-1945: Japanese Occupation in Singapore
Everything changed during the 3 years and 8 months of hardship under the japanese rule. Singapore came to be known as Syonan-to, often translated as 'light of the south'. The country was nothing like its new name. Instead, it was a period of darkness in the history of Singapore when innocent people were gruesomely killed and tortured.

Behind the facade of this very successful and prosperous nation lies a past that we will forgive but never forget.

Phil was flexible, friendly and knowledgeable. He had a good quality vehicle large enough for all our luggage and was a good driver. Our day in Singapore was made interesting, enjoyable and relaxing thanks to his easy manner, familiarity with all the city locations and broad knowledge of both current politics/economics, as well as history.
