2. 5-3 hours and a 220 km drive north of Christchurch is Kaikoura with its peninsula reaching out into the Pacific Ocean, wild beaches and rich sealife.
In Kaikoura the tour includes a 3. 5 hour Whale Watch Kaikoura boat trip out into the Pacific Ocean to look for these giant creatures (and other sea life). This world-famous trip uses large, stable modern aluminium catamarans for their speed and safety. The guides are very experienced and provide a huge amount of information on the whale habitat and how they can be watched in their own environment. The business is owned and run by Ngai Tahu- the South Island Maori tribe- and is an excellent example of how indigenous people, business and tourism can work together. successfully. . . . . they have been running these tours since the 1990's.
Leaving Christchurch at 8 AM, we drive north on State Highway 1 through northern Canterbury to Kaikoura.
Our trip passes through the Canterbury Plains, the Waipara wine region, Cheviot and the scenic coastal SH1. . . look out for seals, dolphins (up to 500 in 1 pod !), crayfish pots and seabirds along this fascinating, rocky coast.
Arriving Kaikoura at 12 PM we explore the area and sail on the Whale Watch Kaikoura catamaran. . . . as well as whales dolphins, albatrosses, seals etc. are often seen. Whale species encountered in the past include orcas, pilot whales, blue whale and many others.
We return along the same route to your Christchurch City hotel, arriving 7 PM.
